Winter is coming, and the list of things worth packing for the slopes has never been longer. Gloves that hold heat without bulk. Layers that breathe on the lift and still hold up at the summit. And, increasingly, eyewear that works as hard as the skier wearing it. AKONI and OUT OF have just added a new name to that list with Explorer, a goggle built where luxury design and snow sports engineering meet.
The collaboration, announced from Switzerland this October, brings together two brands with very different starting points. AKONI was founded in 2020 in Switzerland and made in Japan, working with master artisans on a collector-grade approach to eyewear. OUT OF is an Italian performance company that builds optical solutions for constantly changing outdoor environments, with award-winning snow goggles in its portfolio.

On paper, it is an unlikely pairing. On the slope, it makes sense. A goggle has to look right in the lodge and perform at 3,000 meters, and Explorer is built to do both without compromise. Most luxury eyewear is designed to be seen. Most snow goggles are designed to be worn for hours in conditions that change by the minute. This collaboration asks what happens when both goals sit in the same frame, and the answer is a piece that feels at home at the chalet bar and at the top of a black run.
Lens Technology That Keeps Up With the Mountain
The headline feature is the latest generation of IRID technology, an adaptive lens system that adjusts its tint to changing light in less than one second. Flat light under a storm front, a sudden bank of sun over the ridge, the shadow of a pine line on a steep pitch: the lens lightens or darkens to keep vision sharp as conditions shift. That matters most when the terrain changes faster than you can reach for a second pair. Skiers who have spent a day squinting through the wrong tint will recognize the difference immediately. Good vision on the mountain is not a luxury. It is the thing that lets you commit to a line, read the snow ahead, and ski with confidence from the first run to the last.
This collaboration represents more than a product launch. It is the meeting of two brands that challenge convention and constantly push technological and creative boundaries. Together, we have built something that speaks to the future of luxury performance.” shared Rosario Toscano CEP and Founder of AKONI
What sets Explorer apart is restraint. The technology is advanced, but it is not announced loudly on the frame. Instead, the design lets the engineering sit discreetly behind a refined look built on matte black finishes, black rhodium detailing, and a deep emerald green that feels more at home in a city apartment than on a sponsor banner. That balance is the point of the collaboration. Performance gear has long looked like performance gear. Explorer is designed to look like something you would wear to dinner in Gstaad and still trust at the top of a black run.

More Than a Product Drop
The partners are treating the launch as a complete experience rather than a single product drop. A dedicated packaging concept, collectible design elements, and a curated visual campaign run through the whole project, from the first brand touchpoint to the moment the goggle comes out of its case. For collectors, that packaging detail will matter. For skiers, the point is simpler: a goggle that is designed as a whole object, not a technical afterthought with a logo added. Every touchpoint has been conceived to deliver both emotional impact and practical functionality, which is the same balance the frame itself is trying to strike.
Rosario Toscano, CEO and Founder of AKONI, frames the partnership as a broader statement about where luxury performance is heading. “This collaboration represents more than a product launch. It is the meeting of two brands that challenge convention and constantly push technological and creative boundaries. Together, we have built something that speaks to the future of luxury performance.” shared Toscano.

The AKONI | OUT OF collaboration officially launches in November 2026 through selected retail partners and on the brands official web page. If your winter list is still open, Explorer belongs near the top, just below the pair of boots you already broke in last season.
