Yohji Yamamoto presented his womenswear collection during the recently finished Paris Fashion Week. The Spring Summer 2019 collection was inspired by the designer’s unique take on genderless fashion.
SPRING SUMMER 2019 COLLECTIONS
Unisex fashion has become trendy. Ungendered, genderless, neutral gender, whatever you call it… We keep on pushing the boundaries of what differentiates menswear from womenswear. And we now see men and women walking on the same runway… It is clearly a generational movement. Unisex fashion is fun, no doubt there. Yohji himself has started his career by dressing female models with large mens coats. But he says that “gender” in fashion is not about whether you are a man or woman, but rather how you look and others see you. It is not just a categorical interchange of the sexes. As genderless dressing increases in popularity, Yohji pushes back and reminds us of the beauty of femininity. To emphasize the female form he uses cut-out tailoring, wrap skips and zipper details to reveal parts of the body. He also consciously used a range of ethnicities, developing unique looks, hair and makeup styles for each model to highlight their natural beauties. This collection is an ode to women in true Yohji Yamamoto style and a tribute to what he does best. – from Yohji Yamamoto
