What happens “at the end of time, which is also the end of poetry?” In “Kiss of the Sun,” Mary Ruefle summons surreal imagery of Earth’s apocalypse, describing it as the end of “wheat and evil and insects and love” and a time “when the entire human race gathers in the flesh.” Since its conception, humankind has probed the transience of life, confines of death, and infinitude of the Universe. In hopes of prolonging survival and evading demise, quests for the Fountain of Youth or extraterrestrial life have abundantly materialized. “Paradise” is a series of self-portraits paying homage to Einstein’s theory of relativity and scrutinizing humanity’s pursuit of salvation. Taking viewers through space-time, this sequence of vibrant photos juxtaposes the guileless and the disingenuous, codifying the mundane and the otherworldly. Informed by poetry, PC music, Charli XCX, and Mariko Mori, Eve J. Liu photographs, styles, and models in her account of human resilience and vulnerability.
