Designer Rami Al Ali presented his Autumn Winter 2023.24 Couture Collection, that was inspired by renowned French visual artist Henri Matisse, on July 4th, during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. The collection paid homage to Matisse’s cut-out period of the late 1940s by capturing the substance of his “carving into colour” work. With a distinct 30-piece collection, the designer crafted a narrative that celebrated innovation and individuality.
Taking inspiration from Matisse’s avant-garde design method of drawing with scissors, Al Ali adopted a similar approach that explored the connection between color and line, emotion and execution. The collection features striking sculptural forms, dynamic layering, and impeccable craftsmanship, remaining true to the prestigious design codes of the fashion house. Redefining the concept of contemporary femininity, the silhouettes spanned from tea-length minidresses to voluminous multilayered skirts to sharply tailored jumpsuits.
The foundation of the collection was comprised of opulent fabrics and immaculate details, which were augmented by the extraordinary skill and artistry of the Al Ali atelier. To achieve the ideal structural balance for each gown, delicate fabrics such as taffeta, satin, double-faced silks, soft silk muslin, tulles, and tweed were meticulously incorporated. Ivory hues, light vintage rose accents, and delicate beadwork added a dash of elegance and sophistication, creating a flawless impression that balanced understated elegance with head-turning fashion. The handwoven embroidery motifs, characteristic of Al Ali’s couture designs, further exemplified his incredible vision.
The collection’s color palette features jewel tones, conveying an air of sophistication. The combination of teal, sky blue, and raspberry colors with blush pink, ivory, and champagne beige lent depth and a refined undertone. Combining distinct silhouettes with architectural layering added a playful flourish, alluding to the Matisse reference that inspired the collection.
