Fashion brand Erdem unveiled its Pre-Fall 2024 collection that draws inspiration from the life and style of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Known for her electrifying stage performances and a personal life marked by vulnerability and tragedy, Callas’s dualistic nature serves as the muse for the collection.
The collection explores the tension between control and passion, restraint and ferocity, image and expression. It explores how Callas dressed and carried herself, both on and off stage. Some pieces in the collection are directly derived from garments worn by Callas, while others take inspiration from the volumes, details, and motifs of her era. This results in an intriguing mix of structure and drapery, tailoring and organic shapes, reflecting the complexity of Callas’ character.
Silhouettes from the late-50s and 60s are prominent, including cocoon shapes, boat-neck dresses, and felted pea coats with voluminous backs. The collection embodies a sense of decadence with a sharp edge, reminiscent of the memorable quality of Callas’ voice as described by some critics.
In several designs, there’s a play between austerity and playfulness, hinting at a riotous or wild spirit. A black dress adorned with an oversized fuchsia bow and monastic dresses with built-in bows and capes featuring jewel-encrusted shoulders showcase this contrast. A cloqué gown with exaggerated bows on the shoulders combines elegance with exuberance, while a black duchesse dress with a structured bustier and waist displays a sculptural quality.
Casual and formal elements coexist, as seen in knits paired with mint green draped skirts. Flower motifs, particularly roses, symbolize adoration throughout the collection. On silk dresses, these roses appear blurred, capturing the dynamic energy of a performance. A standout piece is a long gown completely covered with hand-dyed applique roses in shades from red to pink. Subtler hints of adulation are present in silk printed roses beneath black tulle skirts and a black peplum suit jacket adorned with hundreds of black crushed flowers.
