The House of Dior has a history of collaborating with artists, one of which has been the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. This alliance goes way back to 1954 when the feminist artist, known not only for her artistic talent but also her modeling career, wore a Dior ensemble in a photograph captured by Henry Clarke. After this initial encounter, the relationship continued in 1965 when Marc Bohan, then creative director of Dior, established a unique creative connection with Saint Phalle, leading to a series of collaborations that left it’s mark.
In a tribute to Saint Phalle’s legacy, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the current creative force behind Dior, designed the spring-summer 2018 ready-to-wear collection with her art as a subject. Today, this legacy is reborn through a collection of garments and accessories that revisit the visionary universe of the artist for the capsule collection celebrating the Chinese New Year. Each piece serves as a canvas for Saint Phalle’s imagination, full of colorful motifs inspired by three of her seminal works: “Tu es mon dragon,” “Strength,” and “Foulard Zodiaque.” These designs can be seen on Dior creations such as the Lady Dior handbag, the Dior Book Tote, and luxurious silk scarves, while an enchanting dragon motif embellishes long-sleeved t-shirts, cozy knits, and denim garments.
