Nike Releasing a Pair of Kobe 8s on the Same Day of His Statue Unveiling

The spirit of Kobe Bryant is set to be immortalized outside the Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center), a venue often referred to as ‘The House That Kobe Built.’ On February 8, 2024, a date symbolically chosen to reflect the jersey numbers of his daughter Gianna (#2) and the two numbers (#8 & #24) Kobe wore as a distinguished member of the Los Angeles Lakers, the Lakers organization will unveil a statue in his honor. This event pays tribute to Bryant’s incredible 20-year NBA career and it also celebrates his impact on the sport and the city of Los Angeles.

The Lakers organization first announced plans for the statue on August 24, at 8:24 a.m. PT, a nod to Bryant’s jersey numbers. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, expressed her gratitude and honor for the tribute in the heart of Los Angeles, in front of the arena that witnessed many of Kobe’s career-defining moments. The ceremony, set to occur before the Lakers’ game against the Denver Nuggets, will be a heartfelt commemoration of Bryant’s legacy. Following the unveiling, fans will have the opportunity to visit the Kobe statue at Star Plaza outside Crypto.com Arena, starting the morning of February 9.  Bryant’s statue, crafted by sculptor Julie Rotblatt Amrany of the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt Amrany, will be the seventh Lakers figure commemorated, standing among legends like Elgin Baylor and Shaquille O’Neal.

Commemorative Sneaker Releases

To commemorate this occasion, Nike is releasing two special editions of the Kobe 8 sneakers, marking the return of the silhouette in Protro form for the first time since the Kobe 8 Halo release on Kobe’s birthday in 2023. These Kobe shoes, are tribute to Bryant’s impact on the game and his unique relationship with Nike, through which he helped shape the future of basketball footwear.

Kobe 8 Court Purple

The Kobe 8 Court Purple edition is a vibrant homage to Bryant’s Lakers legacy, featuring the jersey numbers ‘8’ and ’24’ monogrammed on the engineered mesh upper. The sneakers are designed with purple laces and a soft padded collar for comfort, while a drop-in React foam midsole ensures lightweight cushioning. The purple-hued rubber outsole, split by a shank plate, keeps the midfoot in place, symbolizing Bryant’s stability and strength on the court.

Kobe 8 Radiant Emerald

The Kobe 8 Emerald variant shines with a white Engineered Mesh upper, adorned with an all-over print of the jersey numbers that Bryant wore during his amazing NBA career. An embroidered teal Swoosh and the Mamba’s sheath logo on the tongue add distinctive touches, with Bryant’s signature gracing the lateral heel counter. The inclusion of a drop-in React foam midsole offers lightweight cushioning, and the herringbone-traction rubber outsole, revealing an exposed carbon fiber shank plate, underscores the sneaker’s performance capabilities.
