Rei Kawakubo’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection for COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS, showcased at Paris Fashion Week, expertly blended dramatic flair with iconic silhouettes. This season, Kawakubo drew inspiration from the recent opening of Dover Street Market Paris and the simultaneous celebrations of la fête de la musique. “I want to hope for some light, even if very small,” Kawakubo noted, setting the tone for her collection named “The Hope of Light.”

The collection cleverly intertwined fashion with music, underscored by the London Symphony Orchestra’s rendition of Eric Satie’s “Parade,” a ballet famously associated with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and Picasso’s cubist costumes. This eclectic soundtrack set the stage for models donning headpieces crafted entirely from colorful hair clips, capturing the playful spirit of Kawakubo’s vision.

Kawakubo’s signature mix of media was on full display, with ruffled cavalry coats and voluminous clown collars infusing the pieces with a sense of theatricality. Transitioning from a stark black-pink palette to vibrant hues, the collection was fearless in its execution. The use of bold colors and strong silhouettes layered with diverse materials added a surreal touch that has become synonymous with Kawakubo’s designs.

The designer’s pre-runway note emphasized a desire for lightness, which was evident in the collection’s childlike multicolored headpieces, frothy tulle, and oversized clown ruffs. These motifs reappeared throughout the show, from ruffs on shoes to playful pink details on shirts and coat sleeves. The introduction of a new Nike x CDG silhouette, with pink midsoles and knotted ribbon blazers, added a modern twist.

Textures played a significant role, with striped and checkerboard jacquard outerwear adding depth and contrast. The show culminated in a whimsical finale featuring sheer trench coats filled with washing basket contents, blending practicality with fantasy. This inventive approach showcased Kawakubo’s talent for creating garments that are both imaginative and wearable.

The Spring/Summer 2025 collection from COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS was a striking example of Rei Kawakubo’s creativity and innovation. By merging historical influences with playful and surreal elements, Kawakubo reaffirmed her status as a leading force in fashion.
