Tyler Mitchell Curates Richard Avedon Dialogue at Paris Photo 2024

Gagosian will debut a curated presentation at Paris Photo 2024, led by photographer Tyler Mitchell in his first curatorial role. This exhibition places Mitchell’s contemporary work in conversation with the iconic imagery of Richard Avedon, focusing on Avedon’s social engagement during the 1960s and Mitchell’s explorations of identity, community, and cultural expression in recent years.

The showcase features Avedon’s 1960s photographs alongside Mitchell’s works from the past six years, including never-before-exhibited pieces. Avedon’s collaboration with James Baldwin on Nothing Personal (1964), which reflects on race and society, serves as a thematic cornerstone. Mitchell draws inspiration from Avedon’s nuanced portrayal of both celebrities and ordinary individuals, embracing the blend of elegance, humanism, and cultural commentary that defines both photographers’ practices.

Mitchell’s photography highlights Black life, love, and self-determination through intimate, reflective moments. His works, such as A Glorious Wedding and Blessings to Come (2021), emphasize family traditions and community values, paralleling Avedon’s 1963 Debutante Cotillion series. Both artists explore the significance of ceremony and dress as expressions of pride, illustrating how traditions transcend generations.

The concept for this collaboration emerged after Mitchell selected Avedon’s 1946 mirror self-portrait with Baldwin for the 2023 Avedon 100 centennial exhibition at Gagosian New York. This personal image set the tone for Mitchell’s exploration of photography as a narrative tool, celebrating individuals who shape cultural history through portraiture.
