The latest haute couture collection by Jean Paul Gaultier, designed by Ludovic de Saint Sernin for SS25, presents a lineup of ensembles each telling its own unique story. Dubbed “Mélusine,” the collection makes a narrative that is both mythic and modern, emphasizing high craftsmanship and intricate design details that push the boundaries of traditional couture.

Starting with the showstopper, the off-shoulder bodice in verdigris satin duchesse, the collection features angular hip constructions and exquisite detailing like hand-painted rusted copper eyelets and silver nappa leather lacing. A silk organza mermaid skirt, adorned with hand-embroidered, hand-painted tarnished metal-beaded netting, perfectly complements the bodice, presenting a fusion of robust structure with delicate femininity.

Each piece in the collection carries its own character, from the dramatic opera cape in oak double-faced cashmere of the “Anne Bonny” to the bold, panelled jacket and capri pants of “John Swann”. These pieces showcase a mastery over material and form, with each garment highlighting Gaultier’s signature play on historical and nautical themes. The designs cleverly integrate modern elements with classical silhouettes, making each look both timeless and contemporary.

“The Helm” continues this theme with its strapless minidress in netted oak macramé, detailed with tonal silk mousseline-wrapped boning and ship helm bust detailing, further accentuating the collection’s maritime inspiration. Similarly, “The Anchor” with its halterneck gown featuring a crin anchor motif and “The Captain” with its corseted black satin jacket and mermaid skirt, studded with Swarovski, emphasize a deep connection to the sea.

As the collection progresses, the ensembles grow increasingly avant-garde. “The Hydra” and “The Leviathan” both utilize moulded anthracite latex in crocodile skin patterns to startling effect, blending the mythical with the modern in bold silhouettes that challenge the conventional limits of fabric and design.

Concluding the collection, “La Mariée” presents a stunning bridal look with a goose feather-embroidered corset and a silk organza train, embodying the ethereal and otherworldly essence that runs through the Mélusine collection. This lineup not only pays homage to the rich history of Jean Paul Gaultier but also marks it as a forward-thinking entity in the sphere of fashion.
