Sportswear brand Nike is bringing back an early version of the Air Jordan 1 with the Black Toe Reimagined, a sneaker that revives details from a forgotten prototype. While most Air Jordan 1 retros replicate the version worn on the court in 1985, this release looks further back – to Michael Jordan’s first promotional photoshoots, where an early sample featured subtle differences from the final retail model. With its unique branding and hidden message, this sneaker offers collectors and fans something different from previous retros.

For those looking to get a pair early, GOAT currently has Jordan 1 Black Toe Reimagined grade school sizes available for as low as $85, well below the $140 retail price. This markdown presents a rare opportunity to purchase a significant Air Jordan release at a discount ahead of its official launch.

A Closer Look at the Black Toe Reimagined

Air Jordan 1 Black Toe Reimagined keeps the familiar color blocking that made this version famous – white leather base, black overlays on the forefoot, collar, and Swoosh, and Varsity Red on the heel and ankle panel. However, the biggest change comes at the collar, where the traditional Wings logo is replaced with embossed “Air Jordan” text, reflecting the design from early promotional samples.

Adding to its exclusivity, Nike has incorporated a hidden message on the inner collar of the left shoe, printed in UV-sensitive ink. The text reads “My Very Best” – a phrase Michael Jordan often included when signing autographs for fans. This detail ties the sneaker back to Jordan’s early career and adds a collectible touch.

Nike has also included subtle design choices to enhance the vintage feel of this release. The midsole features a slightly aged appearance, mimicking the natural wear and oxidation seen in original 1985 pairs.

Built for Comfort and Everyday Wear

While the Air Jordan 1 started as a performance basketball shoe, the Black Toe Jordans remain a versatile option for everyday wear. The encapsulated Air-Sole unit in the heel provides lightweight cushioning, and the padded collar offers ankle support. The rubber cupsole ensures durability, while the outsole’s traction pattern allows for a steady grip on various surfaces.

The high-top construction offers a secure fit, while the premium leather upper adds to the sneaker’s longevity. Though the Air Jordan 1 is no longer used in high-performance basketball settings, it remains a reliable choice for casual wear due to its balance of support and comfort.

The Black Toe Legacy

The Black Toe colorway has been a key part of Air Jordan history since 1985, making it one of the most recognizable versions of the Jordan 1. This particular design was first seen during Michael Jordan’s rookie season and quickly became one of the defining colorways of the era. The mix of black, white, and Varsity Red aligned with the Chicago Bulls’ signature colors and also provided a bold contrast that set it apart from other sneakers at the time.

SNEAKERS

Over the years, the Black Toe has been revived in various forms, each reissue bringing slight changes while maintaining the essence of the original. The 2016 retro was one of the most faithful recreations, closely mirroring the 1985 edition with premium leather and accurate color blocking. In 2019, Jordan line introduced the women’s-exclusive Satin Black Toe, replacing key leather panels with satin material to create a more fashion-forward take on the classic. However, this version stands apart by reviving a pre-release prototype that never made it to retail – until now.

Nike has also included special packaging to further connect this release to its origins. The tissue paper inside the box features hand-drawn sketches from Peter Moore, the original designer of the Air Jordan 1. These sketches provide a rare insight into the early stages of the sneaker’s development, giving buyers a glimpse at the thought process behind one of the most influential shoes in history.
