Kendrick Lamar took a break from his usual Nike-centered footwear rotation when he appeared at the Super Bowl 59 halftime show press conference, surprising fans and sneaker enthusiasts alike. Known for his collaborations with Nike and his consistent support of the brand, Lamar caught attention by stepping out in the Unaffected x Asics Gel-Kayano 20 ‘Obsidian Grey.’ His appearance at the press conference held in New Orleans came ahead of his halftime performance at the Caesars Superdome, which had already generated widespread discussion before the game. The event provided a platform for Lamar to address the media before one of the most high-profile performances of his career.

The rapper’s selection of the limited-edition Unaffected Gel-Kayano 20 drew interest due to its departure from his typical sneaker preferences. Released as part of a collaborative three-piece collection, this version of the Gel-Kayano combines performance features with distinct design elements. The decision to wear a pair from a Seoul-based streetwear label, Unaffected, speaks to Lamar’s evolving style, reflecting an appreciation for functional yet unconventional pieces. Whether or not this marks a broader shift in his sneaker allegiances remains to be seen, but for now, his choice put the collaborative Asics model firmly in the spotlight.

The Unaffected x Asics Gel-Kayano 20 Collaboration

The Unaffected Gel Kayano Obsidian Grey is part of a three-piece collection that reimagines the classic running silhouette with modern updates. Asics originally introduced the Gel-Kayano 20 in 2013, building on its legacy of stability-focused running shoes designed for long-distance performance. This collaboration refines the design, integrating technical elements and material enhancements while keeping the shoe’s core identity intact.

These Asics sneakers feature a dark grey mesh upper, reinforced with a transparent TPU Fluidfit cage that enhances flexibility while maintaining structural integrity. Unlike traditional lacing systems, the Unaffected collaboration replaces standard laces with a drawcord toggle setup, a feature more commonly seen in trail-running footwear. This modification enhances convenience while also reinforcing the sneaker’s performance-driven aesthetic.

A translucent mudguard wraps around the shoe, adding durability while maintaining a clean, streamlined look. Branding details are minimal but intentional – Unaffected is printed on the lateral heel of the right shoe, while dual-branding details appear inside on the custom sockliner. The grey EVA midsole is engineered with visible Gel cushioning in both the forefoot and heel, ensuring superior impact absorption and comfort.

With the Unaffected x Asics Gel-Kayano 20 still available at retail, its placement in such a high-visibility setting may lead to increased demand. Limited-edition sneaker collaborations often gain traction through exposure rather than marketing, and Lamar’s selection has already placed the Unaffected project into a larger conversation within sneaker culture.

The Performance Legacy of the Gel-Kayano 20

Since its original release in 2013, the Gel Kayano 20 has been a staple in Asics’ lineup of long-distance running shoes. The model was designed for stability and support, with features like dual Gel technology inserts for shock absorption and the Guidance Trusstic system to provide structural reinforcement without limiting flexibility. These elements have made it a favorite among runners, but in recent years, the sneaker has gained attention in lifestyle and streetwear circles due to its technical yet wearable silhouette.

SNEAKERS

The Unaffected collaboration maintains these performance-driven aspects while refining the sneaker’s materials and design for a more contemporary appeal. The subtle modifications, such as the transparent overlays and drawcord lacing, align with Unaffected’s design philosophy of merging practicality with a clean, modern aesthetic. The shoe remains fully functional as a running sneaker, but the reworked details make it a standout piece in casual wear as well.

Kendrick Lamar’s Halftime Performance

Lamar’s halftime show was structured as a 13-minute set that blended his biggest hits with social commentary. The performance opened with actor Samuel L. Jackson, dressed as Uncle Sam, introducing Lamar to the stage. The introduction set the tone for a performance that challenged mainstream perceptions of hip-hop and cultural representation.

Lamar performed tracks including Humble, DNA, Euphoria, and Man at the Garden, incorporating choreography and visual storytelling to reinforce the show’s themes. Dancers wore shirts labeled too loud, too reckless, and too ghetto, confronting stereotypes about Black artists in mainstream entertainment.

SZA joined Lamar on stage for Luther and All the Stars, shifting the show’s tone before it built up again. Producer Mustard made an appearance, while Serena Williams briefly joined the stage during Not Like Us, a track that had already sparked discussions due to its pointed lyrics. Though the song was slightly altered for the Super Bowl, its meaning remained clear.

Unaffected’s Rise in Sneaker Culture

Unaffected, founded in Seoul in 2023, has quickly gained attention for its utility-driven approach to streetwear. The brand incorporates elements from military, outdoor, and technical gear, resulting in clean, functional designs that prioritize subtle details over heavy branding.

The Unaffected x Asics Gel-Kayano 20 collaboration aligns with this philosophy, taking a performance sneaker and refining it with modern materials and a restrained design approach. Unlike many collaborations that rely on bold colors or exaggerated branding, Unaffected’s interpretation of the Gel-Kayano 20 keeps the focus on functionality and wearability.

While Asics has collaborated with major brands in the past, this partnership introduces a fresh perspective, emphasizing utility and modern design language rather than relying on nostalgia or high-fashion influences.
