Miley Cyrus announced her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, out May 30, with a visual concept and cinematic ambition unlike anything she’s done before. The announcement arrived alongside a surreal trailer teasing the album’s companion film and album artwork featuring Cyrus in archival 1997 Thierry Mugler couture, shot by Glen Luchford. The album will include 13 tracks and is executive produced by Cyrus herself alongside Shawn Everett, best known for his work with Kacey Musgraves and Alabama Shakes.

Hints began surfacing last week, cryptic imagery on social media, shadowy billboards in Buenos Aires and Amsterdam, teaser posters across São Paulo. It was classic Cyrus misdirection: no titles, no quotes, just a sense of mounting anticipation. Now, the mystery has taken shape. Something Beautiful arrives two years after Endless Summer Vacation, the album that produced “Flowers”, her biggest commercial success to date. That song, which earned Cyrus two Grammys, remains tangled in an ongoing copyright suit over alleged similarities to Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.” But Cyrus isn’t slowing down.

The project’s visual film, due out in June, was co-directed by Cyrus, Jacob Bixenman, and Brendan Walter. It’s backed by Columbia Records, Live Nation, and Panos Cosmatos, the filmmaker behind Mandy, whose fingerprints are all over the film’s trailer. Cyrus appears in kaleidoscopic fragments, making out with a stranger, walking alone through city streets, posing on soundstages in custom Alexander McQueen, Alaïa, and Jean Paul Gaultier. It plays more like a fever dream than a pop film. The teaser ends with a line spoken by Cyrus: “If I give you all my love?”

The music, while still under wraps, is expected to pull listeners into new territory. Produced with longtime collaborators and her partner Maxx Morando, the record leans into distortion and contrast, both thematically and sonically. Cyrus hinted that the sound palette includes elements meant to “elevate frequencies,” blending heartbreak with transcendence. “I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much,” Cyrus shares.

For Her, Something Beautiful isn’t just an album, it’s an ecosystem. From couture fashion and mythic revenge tales to experimental soundscapes and a full-length visual companion, it marks a decisive shift in how she wants her work to be consumed. Less radio hit, more immersive hallucination. And if the cryptic promos, surreal trailer, and Mugler couture are any indication, Miley Cyrus isn’t here to repeat herself. She’s building something strange and completely her own.
