Converse presents First String, a line positioned as the brand’s most advanced expression of the Chuck Taylor. The launch focuses on craft and material quality, offering three versions of the Chuck: a vintage-washed heavyweight canvas, a premium leather build, and a Japanese tropical knit. Each pair reflects Converse’s intent to create a product that feels elevated while retaining the familiarity of the All Star.
The design emphasizes durability and comfort through both structure and material. Added weight and reinforced construction give the sneaker strength, while elevated foxing tapes, refined textiles, and leather linings provide a tactile finish. At its base, a Vibram outsole introduces performance elements long associated with outdoor footwear. Known for traction and temperature regulation, Vibram brings the Chuck Taylor added longevity. Cushioning comes through a molded sockliner built with Converse CX and Nike Air technology, improving underfoot comfort.
Every detail in First String reflects precise adjustments. The last has been widened to suit modern foot shapes, while the toe cap has been shortened to create a more balanced silhouette. A lace keeper stabilizes the tongue, and the eyerow pattern has been revised to reduce the opening, ensuring a more secure fit. These measured changes maintain the Chuck Taylor’s recognizable form while making it more functional for daily wear.
Iconic features of the sneaker have also been reconsidered. Pinstripes now appear in a tonal wheeled treatment, the license plate has been enlarged with inspiration from late 1950s editions, and the collar top-line has been reshaped for a cleaner profile. Eyelets have been enhanced for a polished finish, while the packaging carries the same premium sensibility. Each pair arrives in a heavyweight two-piece cardboard box modeled on vintage designs, accompanied by a dust bag and cardboard sleeve.
The First String Chuck will release worldwide on September 16 with initial selections in leather, novelty materials, and canvas. A second group of colorways will follow on November 1.
