JJJJound and PUMA Present a New Take on the Mostro

The collaboration updates the 1999 silhouette with material upgrades and two color options

PUMA and JJJJound expand their collaboration with a new version of the Mostro, scheduled to release in July 2025. The design revisits a model introduced in 1999 and updates its construction with a restrained approach guided by JJJJound’s direction. The result is a stripped-down sneaker available in two colorways, brown and navy, delivered with an emphasis on material, shape, and detail.

This release follows the partners’ previous work on a Suede model in 2022, which launched exclusively in China. With the Mostro, the scope expands but the language remains focused. JJJJound removes the forefoot strap that defined the original Mostro and replaces it with a lacing system that aligns visually with the shoe’s butter yellow leather liner. The upper is built in premium nubuck, while PUMA’s Formstrip is interpreted through tone-on-tone stitching instead of its usual graphic form.

The black spiked sole stays intact, preserving the silhouette’s distinct structure while balancing the more subdued upper. No logos appear on the outer surface of the shoe. Instead, the only reference to JJJJound comes through a branded insert on the insole.

Alongside the general release, the collaboration includes a separate version reserved for friends and family. This edition keeps the original strap closure and introduces a two-tone design, but it will not be offered to the public.

The decision to reduce visible branding and revise key construction elements reflects JJJJound’s consistent approach to product. The Montreal-based studio often engages with archival forms and edits them with minimal structural interventions. In the Mostro, that approach translates through the removal of superfluous features, the use of tonal contrasts, and the decision to allow material to define the sneaker’s identity.

The PUMA Mostro first arrived at the end of the 1990s and stood out for its technical profile and aggressive sole. In this version, JJJJound softens the presentation without erasing that origin. The balance between restraint and recognizability holds the release in place – not overly referential, but still tied to the original idea.

The two main colorways, brown and navy, will release through JJJJound’s website on July 10, 2025. A second wave follows on July 12 through selected PUMA retailers. The limited friends-and-family model will remain unreleased.
