Air Jordan 4 Comic Brings Pop Art to the 1989 Icon

Jordan Brand will release the Air Jordan 4 Comic on July 25, giving the 1989 silhouette a graphic treatment inspired by comic-book culture.

Off White premium leather forms the upper and gives the brighter details a neutral base. Multi-color sections introduce pink, purple, orange and yellow behind the transparent vamp and side netting. University Red and pink accents appear around the lace system, tongue and forefoot, while black elements frame the color scheme along the support wings, heel and midsole.

Jordan Brand adapts familiar Air Jordan 4 components to fit the comic theme. A pink action-burst shape replaces the usual top wing eyelet treatment, bringing a graphic detail associated with printed sound effects and illustrated impact scenes. The tongue carries a pink Jumpman with “Flight” lettering underneath, while white laces and an Off White lining keep the upper connected to its pale leather foundation.

The heel provides the release’s most unusual detail. Nike applies its Nike Air branding in comic-style lettering with gradient and dotted graphic effects. Nike describes this heel treatment as a first. The distinction concerns this illustrated execution, since original Air Jordan 4 pairs already carried Nike Air branding on the back.

Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 4, which debuted in 1989 at an original price of $110. Nike identifies it as the first Air Jordan release to reach an international market and the first model in the series to use over-molded mesh. The original design also used its recognizable support wings and visible Air cushioning in the heel.

The Air Jordan 4 gained an important place in Michael Jordan’s playing history during its debut year. Jordan wore the Black and Cement Grey edition when he scored “The Shot” against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the 1989 NBA Playoffs. The model also appeared in Spike Lee’s film Do the Right Thing, extending its presence beyond basketball during the same period.

The “Comic” edition keeps the model’s visible Nike Air cushioning, which softens each step under the heel. Its sole combines black, cream and pink sections, while the visible Air unit receives an aged cream surround. Pink underfoot ties the lower section to the brighter graphics on the upper.

The official color listing includes Off White, Anthracite, Neutral Grey, Fire Pink, Light Arctic Pink and Muslin. These tones give the sneaker a layered palette that recalls printed panels, gradient inks and illustrated effects while preserving the recognizable Air Jordan 4 structure.

Jordan Brand will issue the Air Jordan 4 “Comic” through Nike SNKRS and selected retailers on July 25. The adult version costs $230. The release also includes Big Kids’ pairs at $165, Little Kids’ pairs at $105 and Toddler pairs at $90.
