For more than a month, the FIFA World Cup 2026 has stretched across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, bringing together 48 nations in the tournament’s largest edition to date. Tonight, it comes down to one match. Argentina and Spain meet at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford to decide the world champion, closing a tournament that has already broken records for attendance, goals, and global reach.

SPORT

The final offers one of the most compelling matchups international football could produce. Argentina arrives as the defending world champion, seeking to become the first men’s national team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup. Spain returns to the final for the first time since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, carrying the confidence of the reigning European champions and one of the tournament’s most controlled performances.

Much of the attention naturally falls on Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal. At 39, Messi enters what could be the final World Cup match of one of football’s greatest careers. Across the pitch stands 19-year-old Yamal, whose rise has already reshaped expectations around a new Spanish generation. Their meeting has become the defining image of this final: football’s most accomplished player facing one of its brightest young stars in the sport’s biggest match.

The tactical contest proves just as intriguing. Spain has built its campaign through patient possession, positional discipline, and defensive consistency, conceding only one goal on its route to the final. Argentina has travelled a more dramatic path, surviving difficult knockout matches through resilience, experience, and decisive moments from players such as Julián Álvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Lautaro Martínez alongside Messi’s creative influence.

Beyond the football, tonight’s final also marks the conclusion of the first 48-team World Cup. More than one hundred matches, sixteen host cities, and three host nations have transformed the tournament into FIFA’s largest sporting event to date, setting a new benchmark for the competition before attention shifts toward the next cycle.

Ahead of kickoff, adidas has captured the scale of the occasion with LA FINAL, a global campaign that brings together players from both finalists in imagery inspired by classic cinema posters. Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, and Julián Álvarez represent Argentina alongside Spain’s Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo, and Pau Cubarsí, with the tournament’s Official Match Ball completing the composition.

Rather than focusing on the outcome, the campaign frames the final as football’s ultimate stage, placing the athletes at the center of a visual narrative built around anticipation and spectacle. Released only days before kickoff, LA FINAL accompanies one of the most anticipated World Cup finals in recent memory, where ninety minutes will determine whether Argentina extends its dynasty or Spain begins a new one.

Argentina vs Spain is live tonight at 3 p.m. ET, 9 p.m. CEST, from New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.
