2016 was a turbulent year for many, fundamentally challenging people’s views on the way our world works and the society in which we live. It seems impossible to escape a feeling of cynicism and disenchantment that reaches far past the world of fashion. Yet despite all of this, it is more important than ever that young people rally together and continue to make their voices heard. DANIEL w. FLETCHER’s AW17 collection draws upon sportswear visuals and the 1970s, another period of dramatic political and cultural shifts, for inspiration. It began with the desire to create a uniform for the youth of today, who feel isolated and unwelcome in a world where their opinions are poorly reflected by political systems and policies. With the return to right-wing politics and xenophobic rhetoric, the task of uniting in the face of a great divide will always be a struggle – yet it is necessary for progressive politics to continue to have a presence. – from Daniel w.
