A statement on capitalism or capitalizing on statement? Trash bags seem to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for many designers this year, including Demna’s $1,790 USD calfskin trash bag pouch. Harry Nuriev follows in Demna’s footsteps with his latest furniture piece. Designer and Crosby Studios‘ creative director has debuted his latest design “The Trash Bag Sofa” at this year’s Design Miami art fair.

The inspiration came from trash bags on the streets of New York City.

The piece is presented as an art installation at Nuriev’s solo show at Design Miami, which ends on December 4. A couch is made out of twelve fabric bags that resemble the classic trash bags with drawstring, stitched together. The designer states he’s trying to convey a message about consumerism and asks the visitors if it’s really worth buying something that will end up in the trash eventually. Is his Trash Bag Sofa going to end up in trash too?
