Fashion house ÉTUDES unveiled its Spring Summer 2024 Collection – the final chapter in their triptych dedicated to Paris, on June 20th, during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. This season, Études embarks on a revolutionary journey, altering the borders of reality within the cityscape. The collection titled “Crépuscule” creates a revolutionary space-time experience that suspends time and liberates space. Clandestinity offers an escape from ordinary life within the zinc mazes, while the fading light of sunset sets the atmosphere for accessing the Parisian roofs. As darkness falls and shapes become shadows, a sense of weightlessness emerges, along with heightened senses and a vivid experience of the present moment. In Paris’s high sphere, one becomes the spectator rather than the observed.
SPRING SUMMER 2024 COLLECTIONS
Études deconstructs and reimagines the conventional image of Parisian rooftops, bringing their unique aesthetic vision to this dystopian setting. The creative team of Études, Jérémie Egry, Aurélien Arbet, and José Lamali, combine influences from gabber culture, skateboarding, and soft tailoring. The brand’s trademark combination of structure and flow, workplace styling, and streetwear comfort is still present. Outdoor inspirations and technical accents soften the sartorial style this season, as tailored elegance meets utilitarian allure. Revisited bombers are transformed into gathered-sleeved jumpsuits, jackets, and trench coats. Wide multi-pocket nylon pants look great with large jackets and stylish double-breasted coats. A technical-outdoor harness intersects with an elevated silk tracksuit.
Throughout the collection, inscriptions like as “Exit,” “Insomnia,” “High,” and the enigmatic “La Nuit Dort le Jour” (“Night slumbers during the day“) punctuate the clothing, evoking graffiti, street culture, and electronic influences. These elements are joined with sublimable images of an alien B-boy and a fiery manga figure reminiscent of Paris’ gargoyles and Gothic buildings. The letter “E” of Études is scratched to look like a motocross emblem, and barbed wire encircles the dreamy word “Crépuscule,” conveying a sense of forbidden and adventurous aesthetics. The color palette spreads like a prelude, swirling with pigeon blue, zinc, and charcoal grays, as well as deep night colors of black and navy. Then, like a warning sign, a flash of orange glow appears, adding life into the collection. Dawn gradually lends a dazzling white hue to the image. Ivory and khaki combine in a mottled, almost pixelated print that is spray-painted onto workplace jackets and pants to resemble graffiti fog. Textural effects that represent the passage of time, such as worn-out trousers and screen-printed jackets graffitied in black, as if harboring traces of soot, express the concept of risk.
The collection is completed with a “carte blanche” collaboration with Julian Farade. The French artist created illustrations solely for Études. Farade, best known for his chimerical bestiary, has reimagined the world of Parisian rooftops through bird, chimney, and butterfly patterns, suggesting the fleeting moment of dusk. Several pieces, including a denim jacket, baggy jeans, and a shirt, have his vivid, chaotic shapes. The Études Spring Summer 2024 fashion show took place on a rooftop parking lot in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, at the foot of Montmartre, overlooking the city’s skyline. The show was set to a live performance from DJ and techno music producer The Hacker.
