Luxury house PRADA unveiled its Spring Summer 2024 Men’s Collection with a fashion show held on June 18th, inside the Deposito at Fondazione Prada, during the recently finished Milan Fashion Week. The Fluid Form collection, designed by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, examines the concept of fluid architecture around the human body, and embraces a complete freedom of bodily expression through the foundational elements of the garments. The shirt serves as the starting point for the transformation of a complete range of menswear, including suits, raincoats, active sportswear, and reporter jackets. The collection introduces a concept of expansion and amplification of ideas by reevaluating construction techniques and reconstructing designs, thereby creating a paradox between silhouette and materiality. The ultimate goal is to foster an ongoing awareness of the body within and its liberation.
SPRING SUMMER 2024 COLLECTIONS
As a result of challenging the conventional language of rigorous tailoring, fluidity becomes the central theme. The entirety of the collection embodies lightness and softness, creating a dynamic relationship between the body and apparel. This fluidity permeates all aspects of attire, from singularly shaped headbands and eyewear that resemble preserved moments of motion to unexpectedly supple leather bags. The collection’s significance resides in the absence of traditional boundaries. Although silhouettes are inspired by men’s suits, their structures are inherently flexible. The construction techniques of shirts transfer to tailored garments, imparting a newfound fragility to their archetypal silhouettes. This fusion is exemplified by hybrid garments composed of cotton poplin and tailored elements, which exist in a new domain that defies traditional sartorial classifications.
The collection challenges foundational notions of function and purpose. Decoration assumes a three-dimensional form, reinventing floral designs through the use of corsages and fringe, thereby injecting motion into the static. The utilitarian pockets are converted into decorative elements, distancing themselves from their original functionality.
