Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming limited series, “Griselda,” featuring Sofia Vergara in the lead role as the infamous Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, also known as the “Godmother.”
From the minds behind the hit series “Narcos,” writer-producer Eric Newman and director Andrés Baiz, the show explores Blanco’s life as she ascends to power, establishing one of the most profitable drug cartels in history while balancing the challenges of parenthood with her three sons. Griselda Blanco orchestrated a ruthless and violent cocaine trade in New York and Miami during the 1970s and ’80s, after immigrating from Colombia. The narrative culminates with her arrest in 1985, marking her as the first woman criminal to amass a billion-dollar fortune. Tragically, Blanco was murdered in Colombia at the age of 69 in 2012.
Griselda Blanco’s tumultuous life has been previously depicted in various films and TV shows, such as the 2018 Lifetime biopic “Cocaine Godmother” featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones and the 2006 documentary film “Cocaine Cowboys.”
Sofia Vergara not only takes on the challenging role of Griselda Blanco but also serves as an executive producer for the series. The star-studded cast includes Alberto Guerra, Vanessa Ferlito, Alberto Ammann, Christian Tappan, Diego Trujillo, Paulina Davila, Gabriel Sloyer, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Martin Rodriguez, and José Zúñiga.
The creative team behind “Griselda” comprises Eric Newman, Ingrid Escajeda, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro, with Miro and Escajeda serving as co-showrunners. The project, developed over eight years by Vergara and executive producer Luis Balaguer with Latin World Entertainment, boasts additional executive producers such as Philipp A. Barnett, Alfredo Septién, Turi Meyer, Gina Lucita Monreal, Brenna Kouf, and Cassie Pappa.
