First revealed during Wales Bonner’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway show, the adidas Originals by Wales Bonner WB Adios Neftenga is a reimagined version of the Adios Neftenga, originally made famous by Ethiopian marathon runner Haile Gebrselassie, who wore the prototype during his record-breaking run at the 2008 Berlin Marathon. This collaboration pays homage to the legacy of speed and precision while giving it Bonner’s distinctive aesthetic.
SNEAKERS
The sneaker retains the iconic lightweight design that made it a performance favorite, while introducing suede overlays and co-branded elements that add a high-fashion touch. The “Light Yellow” and “Core Black” colorway echoes the original adidas Adios Neftenga, yet the addition of Wales Bonner’s signature style elevates it into a lifestyle shoe.
This release also showcases Bonner’s ongoing exploration of cultural narratives through design. By referencing iconic marathon history and blending it with contemporary streetwear sensibilities, Bonner continues to innovate within her partnership with adidas, which began in 2020.
Limited quantities of the sneaker are expected to make this drop highly sought after, with a global release set for September 12, 2024. The new Wales Bonner shoes will be available on platforms like adidas CONFIRMED and Wales Bonner’s website, with sign-ups opening ahead of the launch.
Beyond the technical aspects, this collaboration also follows the broader trend of merging high-fashion with sportswear, a space in which Wales Bonner has been particularly successful. Her past partnerships with adidas, which have seen reinterpretations of archival silhouettes like the Samba and SL 72, continue to push the boundaries of both design and function.
