Are your eyeglasses causing headaches or discomfort? You’re not alone. According to research published in the British and Irish Orthoptic Journal, headaches from eyewear are more common than many realize, with reports ranging from 11.6% to 86% in clinical settings. The study highlights that individuals with mild hyperopia and astigmatism, particularly against-the-rule astigmatism, are prone to experiencing headaches. Incorrect prescriptions or poorly fitting frames often compound these issues.

A variety of factors can trigger discomfort. Medical News Today notes that even a slight change in prescription may cause your eyes to strain as they adjust to the new lenses. Incorrect pupillary distance (PD), or the measurement between your pupils, is another culprit. If the lenses are not aligned with your PD, headaches, blurred vision, and fatigue can quickly follow. The good news is that you don’t have to keep suffering. Simple steps can make your eyewear fit more comfortably. Here are a few tips to help you achieve just that.

Measure your pupillary distance

Getting this measurement right is essential for ensuring you look through the most accurate part of your lenses. Your pupillary distance (PD) is the measurement in millimeters from the center of one pupil to the other. When your PD is off, it can lead to eye strain, fatigue, or blurry vision. The higher your prescription, the more critical it becomes to have an accurate PD.

To get the most comfortable fit, make sure you know your PD before purchasing new glasses. This can easily be done using the Opthy app, which measures your PD in a few simple steps. First, align your face with your phone camera and ensure good lighting. Follow the app’s vocal instructions, and within minutes, you’ll have your exact PD measurement, helping you choose glasses that are perfectly tailored to your vision needs.

Explore low bridge fit options

When it comes to finding the most comfortable eyeglasses, exploring low bridge fit options can make all the difference. Low bridge glasses are designed for those with flatter or lower nose bridges, wide faces, or higher cheekbones, helping to prevent common issues like slipping or uncomfortable pressure.  Also known as Asian fit frames, these eyewear feature low bridge designs with adjusted nose pads and frame angles for a more comfortable and secure fit on the wearer’s face. Many optical retailers now offer this frame style, including top brands like Ray-Ban, Prada, and Oakley.

Choose the best frame material for your lifestyle

Different materials have different advantages, depending on factors like skin sensitivity, activity level, and style preferences. Acetate frames, for instance, are a popular option because they’re lightweight, hypoallergenic, and considered superior in quality compared to traditional plastic frames. If this is up your alley, consider luxury eyewear brands like Gucci. Their latest eyewear collection features modern silhouettes and uses acetate, ensuring durability and comfort without compromising on style. For those with more active lifestyles, Oakley’s O-Matter material offers flexibility and durability. Many of Oakley’s models also feature no-slip nose pads, ensuring your glasses stay in place even during intense activities.

Customize your glasses’ lens coatings

The right coatings on your lenses can further reduce discomfort, particularly if you suffer from migraines or spend a lot of time in front of screens. For migraine sufferers, specialized lenses with an FL-41 tint can be a game-changer. This tint is designed to filter out certain wavelengths from fluorescent lighting, making it ideal for individuals with light sensitivity. Additionally, blue light is a known migraine trigger, affecting about 38% of people with migraines. Blue light-filtering lenses, especially those that filter out light in the 480 nm to 500 nm range, can help reduce migraines caused by prolonged screen time.

On the other hand, if you spend a lot of time outdoors under the sun, it may be wise to invest in glasses with photochromic lenses. These types of lenses adapt to different light conditions, darkening under the sun and returning to clear indoors. This means that you won’t have to switch between sunglasses for UV protection or glasses for vision correction.

Try before you buy

Testing out a new pair of glasses is crucial to ensuring that your specs look or feel great from day one. Fortunately, virtual try-ons and at-home trials are now mainstay features in many online eyewear stores. Virtual try-ons are an online innovation that allows shoppers to use augmented and virtual reality to experience a product more fully before purchasing it. Think of it as a virtual mirror that gives you a better idea of how glasses will look on you in real life, replicating the physical shopping experience.

If you prefer testing actual frames, some retailers also give shoppers the option to try on glasses at home. Typically, you’re allowed to choose a certain number of frames which are then shipped to your doorstep. Afterwards, you can keep the frames you like best and send the rest back to the retailer.

Visit your optician for regular adjustments

Over time, frames can loosen or become misaligned due to natural wear and tear, contributing to discomfort or headaches. Regular adjustments at your optician can keep your glasses fitting comfortably in spite of these changes. Optical chains like LensCrafters, as well as brands such as Ray-Ban, offer free in-store adjustments to keep your frames in top condition regardless if the glasses are purchased in person or online.

We recommend making the most out of benefits like this. So, visit your optician every few months to ensure your glasses maintain their optimal fit and prevent unnecessary strain on your nose or ears. Aside from keeping your glasses as comfortable as possible, these tune-ups also extend the life of your frames.

When your glasses fit right, you can go about your day headache-free and with optimal clarity. So, next time you shop for new glasses, take the time to prioritize comfort as much as style. Your eyes will thank you.
