Slimane Next in Line for Gucci After De Sarno?

Significant changes are underway at Gucci, with Creative Director Sabato De Sarno leaving after only two years at the helm. The Italian fashion house, which has been struggling to regain its footing amidst a prolonged slump, announced that De Sarno’s exit comes without a designated successor. Instead, the upcoming fall-winter collection set to be showcased in Milan later this month will be the collective effort of the Gucci design office. This move marks a pivotal moment for Gucci, reflecting the ongoing turbulence within the luxury fashion sector.

Adding to the intrigue is the speculation surrounding Hedi Slimane, the former Creative Director of Celine. Slimane, known for his transformative touch and keen market sensibility, left Celine in October 2024 shortly after presenting a highly acclaimed Spring 2025 collection at Paris Fashion Week. His departure has set off a flurry of rumors about his next big move, with insiders hinting at a possible takeover at Gucci. This speculation is fueled by Slimane’s proven track record and the fashion industry’s inclination for dramatic leadership shifts.

Slimane’s potential appointment comes at a time when Gucci desperately needs a resurgence. Under De Sarno’s direction, the brand often faced criticism for not hitting the mark with its collections, which were frequently spotlighted for intense scrutiny by both critics and consumers. The need for a strong creative vision is paramount, and Slimane’s aesthetic could be the catalyst Gucci needs to revitalize its image and appeal to a broader audience.

Further stirring the pot, Slimane has also been mentioned as a potential successor to Giorgio Armani. The venerable Armani, who celebrated his 90th birthday with a visit to New York this past July, represents another iconic fashion house that could benefit from Slimane’s creative rejuvenation.

As Gucci prepares to unveil its latest collection without a named creative leader, the industry remains on the edge of its seat, eager to see whether Slimane will bring his touch to the storied brand or take his talents to another fashion giant. Wherever he lands, the fashion world will indeed be watching.
