Nike revisits one of its more unconventional designs with a seasonal twist, unveiling the Air Rift “Buckle Strap” in a monochromatic black colorway. Now available through Nike, this reworked version of the split-toe sneaker leans into edgier aesthetic.

Originally introduced in 1996 as a performance shoe inspired by Kenyan barefoot runners, the Air Rift stood out for its split-toe construction and lightweight build. Over the years, it’s become a cult favorite among fashion insiders. The new “Buckle Strap” edition retains the key anatomical design but replaces its typical materials with black leather, signaling a departure from the more technical or utilitarian executions of the past.

The transformation is most apparent in the fastening system. Where nylon hook-and-loop straps once held the shoe together, three leather straps with metal buckles now secure the foot, two crossing the forefoot and one wrapping the heel.

Functional updates are minimal, with the shoe still incorporating a stretchy neoprene-like inner bootie for a sock-like fit. The outsole remains rugged and responsive, retaining the Air Rift’s original running DNA. But the visual language of this release speaks more to urban wearers than athletes. The inclusion of a small cherry blossom charm, rendered in pink and yellow and dangling from one of the buckles, adds a final seasonal accent.

Priced at approximately $102 USD, the “Buckle Strap” edition of the Nike Air Rift is now available through Nike channels. It arrives as part of a broader industry shift toward footwear that blurs the line between utility and aesthetic-driven design, with balletcore subtly influencing designs well beyond the traditional ballet flat. With its combination of structure and softness, this reimagined Air Rift appeals to those looking for comfort, character, and a low-key nod to what’s shaping footwear design today.
