In Saint-Damien, Quebec, Anne Carrier Architectes completes Résidence Saint-Damien, a family home positioned at the meeting point of agricultural fields and forest. Set along the river’s edge, the project responds directly to the topography, extending as a linear volume that follows the natural slope of the land. Subtle shifts in the form reflect the river’s sinuous course while preserving existing vegetation.
ARCHITECTURE
The house settles within a canopy of mature conifers. On the upper level, vertical wood cladding adopts a tone and rhythm that recall surrounding tree bark. A natural stone base anchors the structure to the ground, reinforcing the impression that the upper volume rests lightly above the landscape. This dialogue between material and context defines the architectural expression from the first approach.
A covered terrace stretches along the main façade, structured by vertical slats that filter light and maintain privacy while opening views toward the fields. The terrace aligns with a landscape axis that connects to a nearby bridge crossing, extending circulation along the river and linking both ends of the house. This exterior pathway strengthens the continuity between interior spaces and the surrounding terrain.
The building’s fragmentation creates a central articulation housing the entrance and staircase. This element separates day and night zones and clarifies movement through the home. Living spaces occupy the upper floor to capture unobstructed views and abundant natural light.
Stone, wood, and steel shape the project both structurally and visually. Wood decking supports a modulated roofline that responds to orientation and sightlines. Beneath it, a continuous clerestory glazing band wraps around the building, preserving a constant visual connection to sky and forest while enhancing the perception of a floating roof plane.
