ASICS developed the shoe with designers and specialists from the ASICS Institute of Sport Science. The team used archival references as its starting point and combined Japanese design principles with New York’s dynamic energy. This approach keeps the original GEL-NYC recognizable and gives its construction a substantial technical update.
FF BLAST PLUS cushioning provides the primary change underfoot. ASICS pairs the foam with GEL technology units in selected areas of the sole, creating a lighter and more responsive cushioning system. The system returns responsive energy and delivers sustained comfort with each step, two qualities that support regular wear during long days on foot.
The company also used its research into walking mechanics to shape the shoe. ASICS found that walking places different demands on the body than running, so the development team created features that address those specific patterns. An asymmetrical arch support system promotes an efficient stride, and flex grooves allow the sole to bend during each step. Together, these elements help the shoe respond to the repeated demands of everyday walking.
