What happens when you close your eyes and imagine your ideal home? What does it look like and how does it feel? Is there a pool? How many bedrooms? What’s the yard like and how easy is it to maintain? Is there a garage and driveway or perhaps you’d rather have more space in the house itself and that large, open plan kitchen you always dreamed of. It’s fun to imagine this dream home, but finding it can be much harder than imagining it in the first place. When you are searching, you may find that you have to make some compromises, or that your dream changes shape entirely when you come across a property you love. To begin with, though, here’s how to find your dream home.
Define What You’re Searching For
Before you call a realtor in San Diego to discuss what properties they may have for you, you need to know exactly what you’re looking for. Sit down in a quiet place and make a list of all the things that you definitely have to have in your new home – the things you simply couldn’t live without. Next to that list, write down all the things that you’d love to have if possible, but that you’ll skip if the house that meets all your other requirements doesn’t have. These are the ‘nice to haves’ that aren’t essential, but that could set one house apart from the others when you start searching.
Set A Budget
Having a realistic budget is hugely important. If you don’t know what you can spend, or you have overestimated what you can afford, you may find the dream house for you only to discover when you apply for a mortgage that it is way out of your price zone. The first thing you should do when you’re house hunting is to get mortgage pre-approval. That way you know exactly what you can afford, and you know that you can start the process without any fuss or delays.
Location
The location of your property is all-important. You already know that you want to live in San Diego, but exactly where needs to be determined before you start searching everywhere. Some areas will suit better than others depending on your place of work, schools, other friends and family members, and your budget. Once you know the exact location you want to live in, you can quickly narrow down your search and only focus on the properties that really make sense.
Look Beyond The Décor
Some people are unable to look beyond the interior of a home, and that could mean they miss out on something that would be perfect for them just because they don’t like someone else’s taste. Remember that the interior of a house can easily be changed – to get ideas you can check out a home remodeling gallery online – so if everything else fits your idea of a dream property and the cost of remodeling fits in your budget, you can go ahead and buy.
