Designing Calm 6 Tips For A Happier Home Environment

From feng shui to scented candles and aromatherapy oils, people have always been trying to create a retreat and feeling of calm in their homes. Everyone wants their home to be their sanctuary – their little oasis of calm where they can relax and unwind at the end of the day. Now with everyone spending so much more time at home, this has never been truer.

People are looking to improve their interior design and create a happier environment at home to help combat the stresses of daily life. However, right now you may not want to carry out any serious renovating work, but there are some simple things you can implement to create a feeling of calm and in turn a happier home.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the simple design tips you can put into effect to bring the good vibes into your home.

Designing Calm 6 Tips For A Happier Home Environment

Let There Be Light

Light can play a big part on our emotions – have you noticed how everyone feels happier on days when the sun shines as opposed to grey gloomy days? The same is true in our homes. Both natural light and artificial light are extremely important in creating a happy home environment. Try to allow as much natural light into your home as possible. If privacy is not an issue, you could go without curtains or opt for sheer drapes. If your home doesn’t get enough natural light, why not consider adding in some tubular skylights to bring more natural light in? This is sure to have a positive effect on the overall mood in your home.

Get Green Fingered

Spending time in nature has been linked to reducing stress levels and tension, so why not bring the outside into your home by adding some plants to your home décor? Not only do houseplants brighten up a space and create a feeling of calm by simply seeing rejuvenating greenery everywhere, but certain houseplants also purify the air and in turn increase the oxygen levels in your home.

Choose The Right Colours

Just like light, colours can also have an effect on our moods and mental states. For example, blues have been shown to have a calming effect on moods whereas yellows and greens have been shown to make people happier and more productive. If you prefer to keep things neutral and you don’t want to paint whole walls in bright yellows, blues or greens, you can always add accessories and pieces of furniture in these colours to get the desired effect.

Choose A Scent For Your Home

Just as light and colours can affect our mood, so too can certain smells and aromas. You know – that feeling you get when you smell freshly baked bread or that first whiff of the salty ocean waves. Choose a scent that you love or that brings back a positive memory and start incorporating it into your home with scented candles, oil burners, incense and diffusers. Good smells and, in turn, good vibes will soon be wafting around your home.

Declutter

One sure way to make yourself happier at home is to tidy up and declutter. Putting things back in their place after you use them as well as going through any items, both décor and furniture that you no longer use or enjoy and donating them or giving them away. You will definitely feel happier when everything is organised and in its place.

Add White

The colour white is very refreshing and uplifting as we associate it with cleanliness. It also reflects light which can make a room feel brighter and more spacious than it actually is. These feelings of space and cleanliness will, in turn, lift your mood.

Design Your Home For Calm And Happiness

With a few simple tweaks, you can create a calmer, happier atmosphere in your home. Natural light, plants, the right colours and scents as well as getting rid of mess and clutter can all do wonders to boost your mood. Try some out for a happier home environment.
