This year’s Met Gala’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” pays homage to the life and legacy of the late designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld. Focusing on the designer’s stylistic vocabulary from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019, the theme spotlights the German-born designer’s unique working methodology through his designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld.
Last night the red carpet had once again once again rolled out on The Met’s iconic steps and this time, it was all for Karl. See below DSCENE Magazine’s favourite looks:
Eddie & Hannah Redmayne in Alexander McQueen
English actor Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah showed up to this year’s Met Gala in Alexander McQueen looks. Eddie wore a custom double-breasted tuxedo in black with pearl brooch and draped chain embroidery, paired with two-pleat wide leg trousers, wile Hannah shined in a dress with a draped pearl-embroidered bodice and a scalloped skirt from the Alexander McQueen’s Spring Summer 2012 collection.
Anne Hathaway & Donatella Versace in Atelier Versace
Anne Hathaway wore a custom Atelier Versace gown combining signatures of both Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel and Versace. While the silhouette references 1990s Versace, a construction of gold thread French tweed recalls Lagerfeld’s time at the House of Chanel. The design took the Atelier over 450 hours of handcraft and 15 meters of fabric to complete. Donatella Versace’s look took inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Spring-Summer 2018 collection.
Simu Liu in Atelier Versace
Canadian actor Simu Liu channels Karl Lagerfeld’s signature look, wearing a custom Atelier Versace tuxedo, with designer’s distinctive high-neck collar and crocodile embossed leather gloves and black boots.

Rihanna In Custom Valentino
Rihanna arrived to the Met Gala wearing a custom Valentino look together with A$ap Rocky. The music star opted for a silk faille dress with a 5-meter train and silk faille cape with 30 camelias, 500 petals and 25 leaves, designed especially for her by Valentino Creative Director Pier Paolo Piccioli and created by 30 seamstresses.
Kim Kardashian In Schiaparelli Haute Couture
Kim Kardashian showed up in Custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture look, designed by Daniel Roseberry. The star wore a draped skirt and top made from over 50,000 freshwater pearls and over 16,000 crystals, while her look took one dozen artisans over 1000 hours to create, as each strand of pearls was strung and draped to her body.
Erykah Badu In Custom Marni
American singer-songwriter and Grammy award winning artist Erykah Badu wore a custom Marni outfit envisioned by the brand’s Creative Director Francesco Risso. A hand-crafted white gown is comprised of over 90,000 meters of custom cut thread to achieve an all-over fluid fringe effect, punctuated by luminescent hand-sewn beads and crystals.

Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh was the starr of the night wearing a custom Karl Lagerfeld couture outfit.
Michaela Coel In Custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture
The co-chair the 2023 MET Gala, actress, screenwriter, director, and producer Michaela Coel appeared in Custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture, designed by house’s Creative Director Daniel Roseberry. She wore a second skin gown in sheer tulle encrusted in golden crystals. Over 135 000 crystal beads, 26 500 mix stones and 3 800 hours of hand embroidery work were required to complete the look.
Skepta In Burberry
British-Nigerian music star Skepta chose to wear Burberry to this years MET ball. He showed up in a custom duck wool jacquard suit with a zip pocket in black and knight blue, paired with a matching tweed blanket.
Lil Nas X In Dior Men
American rapper, singer, and songwriter Lil Nas X came to the Met Gala last night wearing not much beyond a metallic Dior Men thong, silver body paint and pearls and crystals. Known for his boundary-pushing style, the artist finished off his outfit with a Venice carnival mask.

Nicole Kidman in Chanel
On of the most on theme looks was definitely Nicole Kidman’s Karl Lagerfeld-era Chanel Haute Couture gown from 2004. The actress perfectly interpreted the theme, wearing an archival gown that she wore in an iconic Chanel No. 5 commercial from the same year, directed by Baz Luhrmann.
Maluma in Boss
Colombian singer Maluma showed up on the red carpet in an ensemble inspired by a lookbook lensed by Karl Lagerfeld. Creative Director Marco Falcioni drew the inspiration from a Spring Summer 1998 lookbook photographed by Karl, himself, for Hugo Boss. The look consists of a sleek plastron and matching trousers, crafted entirely in a sophisticated, grey-hued leather, accessorized with a fringe-embellished, silk scarf.
