With FW23 Collection, Y-3 explores the intersection of functional design and avant-garde aesthetics

Sportswear brand adidas and the esteemed designer Yohji Yamamoto presented a new chapter in their innovative sportswear saga – Y-3 Fall Winter 2023 Collection Chapter 4. The iconic duo explores the intersection of functional design and avant-garde aesthetics, bringing forward a series termed as ‘Subverted Function’.

Deriving inspiration from adidas’ pioneering innovations, the latest collection, titled Chapter 4, is a winter-ready treasure trove. The collection features apparel choices like puffers, parkas, and vests – each piece equipped with utilitarian elements such as metallic zippers and adaptable snap button closures. A standout feature in the apparel line is the distorted brush stroke design that manifests itself vividly through all-over prints and graphic design executions.

The collection also launches two revolutionary footwear silhouettes: the Y-3 GENDO and the Y-3 KYASU. The Y-3 GENDO reinterprets the renowned adidas Superstar, presenting a radical design enhanced with a hollowed-out TPU plate. The Y-3 KYASU, available in both high and low cuts, embodies a brutalist approach to minimalistic footwear, showcasing a stitched upper combined with a block-like outsole. Also making appearances are the iconic Y-3 SUPERSTAR, Y-3 MARATHON TR, and Y-3 GAZELLE, all presented in captivating monochromatic iterations. Completing the collection is an assortment of accessories designed to battle the winter chill. These include holdall bags, leg warmers, gloves, scarves, balaclavas, and a uniquely wearable vest bag.

To amplify the essence of the new collection, Y-3 also introduces a compelling campaign that evolves from the narrative crafted in Chapter 3. This time, the focus shifts from Berlin’s vibrant music domain to its diverse artist community. The brain behind the compelling visuals is photographer and casting director Valeria, who encapsulates Berlin’s multifaceted spirit, juxtaposing its occasional starkness with the raw energy of its creative inhabitants. Keeping the Y-3 essence intact, the campaign showcases local talents from varied fields – including painter and dancer, Cecile, sculptor and video artist, Henri, music producer, Gabriel, tattoo artist and painter, Sabi, agricultural sciences student, Mareline, art student, Yuuki, and DJ and music producer, Jannis.
