Giambattista Valli N°29 Dreamscape: Why Couture Still Matters in a Ready-to-Wear World

Giambattista Valli’s Haute Couture N°29 is a powerful reminder that true artistry in fashion refuses to be rushed or diluted, even as the industry pivots toward the immediacy of prêt-à-porter. At a time when mass production and accessibility dominate the conversation, Valli stands firm in his devotion to the craft, proving that couture is not just relevant, but essential.

This season, Valli invites us into a world where nymphs and muses drift through idyllic gardens, their silhouettes drawn from the softest rebellion. The collection breathes with references to the hush of nature, laughter by a lake, and those fleeting moments immortalized by Watteau and Fragonard. Here, the Valli Girls linger in the dappled light, their presence both timeless and immediate. The volume in these looks is conjured through fabric alone, not forced by structure or boning. Every drape, every flourish, is achieved by the skilled hands of the atelier, allowing the fabric to lead the way and become the story itself.

Valli’s latest offering is a lesson in restraint and precision. Shapes nod to the 18th century, to Trianon and fêtes galantes, but are reimagined with a lightness that feels entirely modern. Draping wraps around the body, cinched with bows or trailing into endless trains. Embroideries are meticulously assembled from micro silk organza flowers, blossoming naturally from sleeves and décolletés. There is nothing superfluous here. Every decorative element is organic, an integral part of the silhouette and its movement.

What strikes me most is the ongoing dialogue between the bucolic spirit of the 18th century and the sculptural elegance of the 1950s. The collection is rooted in history, yet speaks fluently to the present. Opulent volumes appear to float, defying gravity with their lightness. Valli’s signature tulle is given a playful, unexpected twist. Prints evoke the delicate precision of French pointillisme, while colours, fresh as sorbet, are lifted from the palettes of the great painters of the era. Matte surfaces dominate, allowing every fold and stitch to catch the light in quiet celebration of true craftsmanship.

LATEST COUTURE COLLECTIONS

This moment is especially meaningful for Giambattista Valli. He has just been promoted from Chevalier to Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, a recognition of his contribution to French culture. The honour was marked by an intimate ceremony during Haute Couture Week in Paris, attended by close friends and cultural leaders, with Suzy Menkes offering a heartfelt tribute and Madame la Ministre Rachida Dati presenting the distinction.

In place of a traditional runway, the Maison hosted a personal and immersive presentation in the Salons Haute Couture. This allowed guests a rare look into the heart of the House, its savoir-faire and creative spirit. Valli himself welcomed each guest, sharing creations that reflect the Maison’s codes and refined artistry.

Haute Couture N°29 delivers everything we expect from Valli: the signature dreaminess, the impeccable construction, and the escapism that fashion so desperately needs right now. In a world that feels increasingly uncertain, and an industry that often chases speed over substance, Valli’s dedication to couture is both an inspiration and a necessity. Most of us can only dream of wearing a Valli dress, but it is precisely this kind of dreaming that keeps fashion alive. Designers like Valli ensure that the dream never fades, reminding us why couture still matters.
