adidas Originals Set to Release adiZero Goukana on August 1

The new silhouette draws from marathon-winning tech and LA streetwear design

adidas Originals has introduced adiZero Goukana, a new silhouette that channels the engineering of its championship marathon shoes into a form designed for daily wear. The model arrives August 1 through adidas.com and adidas flagship locations.

SNEAKERS

adiZero Goukana takes cues from the 2008 Adios Neftenga prototype, a performance running shoe that remained unreleased until a limited 2024 collaboration with Wales Bonner. Rather than recreating it, the new silhouette shifts its elements into a context rooted in streetwear. One of the defining design details, lenticular striping, reappears here with updated intent.

The name comes from Japanese, translating to “luxurious and plush.” It references adidas’ connection to Japan and honors Toshiaki Omori, the designer behind the original adiZero line. Material choices reflect the term directly: suede dominates the construction, supported by refined craftsmanship throughout.

Function meets comfort in the shoe’s use of Lightstrike cushioning, a technology drawn from adidas models built for elite-level competition. The same system appears in marathon gear and professional basketball footwear. Though Goukana isn’t designed for sport, its technical base allows it to serve active routines with ease. Athletes like Jalen Green and Travis Hunter have already adopted it in their off-court wardrobes.

The silhouette emphasizes volume. Its sole was shaped with modern styling in mind, complementing wide pants and layered outfits. The upper features mesh and reflective elements alongside the suede. Color is critical to the release: the yellow edition references racing culture and recalls the original Neftenga’s visual language.

Designed in Los Angeles, adiZero Goukana reflects a specific cultural environment. adidas partnered with two community-led groups for the launch campaign. Motoring While Black, led by Rashod Bacon, brings visibility to drivers of color. Fabrica de Rosas, founded by Jaime Rosas, builds inclusive space for cyclists. Both collaborators echo the shoe’s interest in speed, style, and presence in motion.

adiZero Goukana brings adidas’ performance engineering into a streetwear format, maintaining the technical elements originally built for marathon and basketball shoes. The design prioritizes comfort, volume, and urban adaptability without changing its functional core.
