Libertine Spring Summer 2027 marks the label’s 25th anniversary with Out of the Chaos and Into the Garden, a collection that invites its audience into a world of flowers, butterflies and unexpected decorative references. Presented during New York Fashion Week at The National Arts Club on September 9, the season follows Johnson Hartig’s instinctive approach to color, print and found inspiration.

SPRING SUMMER 2027

The collection arrives after 25 years of independence for Libertine. Throughout that period, the label has followed its own creative direction, resisted convention and maintained an identity built around Hartig’s ideas. Libertine has remained independent, profitable and creatively uncompromised through a quarter century, while its influence has extended beyond the scale of the company itself.

Spring Summer 2027 brings that history into a garden-oriented vocabulary. Hartig introduces Warholian butterflies on ivory silk, placing a familiar symbol of transformation onto a light fabric. Butterflies return in exaggerated form as giant paillettes, increasing their scale and giving the motif a physical presence within the clothes.

A Bloomsbury-esque patchwork on linen draws directly from the decorative language long associated with Libertine. Hartig uses patchwork as one of the season’s central textile treatments, placing it alongside prints and surface techniques that develop the collection’s deliberately irregular character.

One of the season’s most personal references comes from Hartig’s own foyer. While painters worked on the space, the designer became fascinated by the paint-covered drop cloths used during the process. Their accidental marks inspired a drop-cloth print, translating the splattered surfaces into fabric and bringing an everyday visual discovery directly into the collection.

Garden imagery continues through hand-silkscreened tools, turning functional objects into graphic motifs. Hartig also develops the theme through a topiary coat, which features hand embroidery depicting double boxwood in Versailles boxes. The piece takes the structured shapes of formal garden design and translates them into decoration placed directly onto the garment.

Together, these elements create the garden imagined in Out of the Chaos and Into the Garden. The collection does not rely on a single floral motif. Butterflies, topiary, tools, patchwork and paint marks each enter from a different source, reflecting the curiosity that continues to guide Hartig after 25 years.

That curiosity remains central to Libertine’s working method. Hartig follows visual ideas as he encounters them, whether they originate in art references, garden forms or the temporary materials left behind while someone paints a room. Spring Summer 2027 brings those observations together through silk, linen, embroidery, silkscreening, paillettes and print.
