JJJJound and New Balance return with a new interpretation of the 990v3, introducing a suede construction that changes the familiar appearance of the retro running silhouette. The latest collaboration, officially titled the 990v3 “Suede,” arrives in a monochromatic tan finish with black accents. The design replaces the model’s traditional combination of mesh and suede with a continuous suede upper, bringing a uniform texture to one of New Balance’s established running silhouettes.

The most significant change comes through the upper, where JJJJound removes the mesh panels that typically define the 990v3. Tan suede covers the entire surface, extending across the familiar panel arrangement while maintaining the model’s recognizable shape. This material choice creates a consistent finish throughout the shoe and shifts attention toward its construction. The uninterrupted suede treatment gives the silhouette a different visual character while preserving the proportions associated with the original design.

Black detailing introduces definition across the tan upper. The signature New Balance “N” logo appears in black along the midfoot, accompanied by matching trim that outlines elements of the sneaker’s construction. Black embroidery spells out New Balance on the tongue, continuing the color scheme through the branding. A rugged black rubber outsole completes the design, giving the sneaker a darker foundation beneath the suede upper.
The colorway establishes a restrained direction for the collaboration, relying on the relationship between tan suede and black detailing. JJJJound retains the shoe’s established identity through its recognizable branding and shape, while the material treatment creates a distinct interpretation of the 990v3. The design focuses on surface texture, allowing the continuous suede construction to become the defining feature of the release.

This approach marks a departure from JJJJound’s previous 990v3 collaborations. The brand worked with New Balance on versions of the model in 2018 and 2022, retaining the traditional combination of mesh and suede across both releases. The 2026 edition introduces a different construction, removing the mesh component entirely and extending suede across areas that previously featured textile panels.
The change follows JJJJound’s recent experimentation with alternative sneaker constructions. Its collaboration with New Balance on the 740 introduced a no-sew upper, demonstrating another approach to modifying an established silhouette through material and structural adjustments. The new 990v3 continues that exploration, using a single dominant material to alter the appearance of a familiar model.
