Considering the title of this post, we can coolly begin by saying that age is just a number and it should never have an impact on the way you dress. Despite knowing this for a fact, it is usually noticed that as women get wiser and older, the outfits that they reached for in their previous chapters of life start holding less appeal now. This brings us straight to today’s topic of the smart outfits that seem perfect for women who are in their 40s.

If you’re someone who is in her 40s, by now you must be having your signature look and style which is very normal. But while we give you few styling tips, we don’t ask you to throw away the most beloved outfits but rather follow the rules that you should bear in mind while dressing up in your mid-40s. Check out some of the greatest tips for looking stylish and trendy in your 40s.

  • Buy only clothes that flatter you rather than trendy ones

Yes, now that you’re in your 40s and your daughter might have reached the teens, you might feel tempted to follow the new fashion trends while picking your clothes. But ideally, you should choose only those dresses or outfits that flatter your body type and your personality. Determine your body shape, whether it is hourglass, pear-shaped or inverted triangle, rectangle or apple-shaped. Accordingly, choose an outfit that enhances your curves.

  • Don’t always try to create a matchy or polished look

It’s great to blend things and become a little bit more playful with your dresses. While a 2-piece suit can give you an older look, choosing plus size dresses and teaming them up with a belt can give you a chic look. And if you earnestly want to wear a jacket, mix it up with pants or skirt in order to achieve a smart look. You may choose an oversized blazer with a trending black pencil skirt and team it up with a nice pair of sneakers.

  • Stay away from fabrics that look cheap or that don’t flatter your body

While you were young, you may have chosen t-shirts made of poor fabrics and managed to look cute in them but now that you’re above 40 years, you’d rather choose fabrics with more substance. Do some research on the internet to get an idea of the best fabrics or the recommended shops where you can find them. Try to go with natural fabrics like cotton, silk, cashmere, and linen and you can wear them for several years in the near future. Steer clear from fabrics that don’t cling to your body or drape well.

  • Don’t wear tight bottoms with tight upper wear

There are definitely exceptions to this rule but generally, wearing tight bottoms like leggings look better when you team them up with a loosely-fitted shirt or a tunic. The same is applicable with skirts. With a tight skirt, choose a lose top and with a lose skirt, choose a tight top.

  • Know the tricks of balancing your belly

If there is one body part that most women, irrespective of their age, want to conceal, it is their mid-section. Choosing pants that fit you appropriately is the best way of addressing this issue. You may choose flat-front trousers that are stretchable can give you a better look. With high waist trousers, you can easily contour that mid-section area. On top of that, wear blouses and tops that you love. Pick something that has a delicate and light seaming above the waist and let it rest around your belly.

Above all, while choosing your style in your 40s, begin by thinking what you’re doing and where you’re going. Do you spend most of the time in office wear or are you transitioning into retirement? Answers to these questions will help you get the right things for your closet.
