From June 28 to July 12, 2023, Louis Vuitton and Sotheby‘s, the world’s best place for art and luxury, will hold an auction of 22 unique Louis Vuitton Artycapucines bags designed by artists. Each bag will be remade, signed, and presented in a Louis Vuitton Boite Chapeau box with its iconic monograms on it. The proceeds will go to a variety of charities and non-governmental organizations selected by the participating artists.
The 22 Artycapucines bags in this auction by Louis Vuitton and Sotheby’s are all one-of-a-kind pieces made with the same exacting skills and materials as the original limited-edition bags. This process required painstakingly tracking down materials and using a wide range of precise and time-consuming artisanal techniques.
Every bag is signed by the artist under the flap, and it will come in a Louis Vuitton Boite Chapeau with a monogram on it. This is a modern hat box based on a style that the Maison first made in 1924. Each of these one-of-a-kind boxes will be “signed” by the artist who made it. This could be as simple as a name or more complicated artwork. Louis Vuitton will give the net profits from the sale of each of these one-of-a-kind Artycapucines to a charity or NGO chosen by the artist. This could be UNICEF or an NGO that works to reduce poverty, help people after disasters, educate people, or protect the rights of refugees.
Artists Alex Israel and Urs Fischer who created the latest DSCENE magazine’s art edition covers are also participating. Alex Israel is donating the proceeds from his bag to BABY2BABY while Urs Fischer is donating to Operndorf Afrika.
For the auction the total of 22 participating artists are Amélie Bertrand, Daniel Buren, Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Gregor Hildebrandt, Donna Huanca, Huang Yuxing, Alex Israel, Liu Wei, Peter Marino, Beatriz Milhazes, Vik Muniz, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Park Seo-Bo, Paola Pivi, Ugo Rondinone, Tschabalala Self, Josh Smith, Jonas Wood, Kennedy Yanko, Zeng Fanzhi, and Zhao Zhao.
