Luxury house LOUIS VUITTON unveiled its Spring Summer 2024 Men’s Collection by Pharrell Williams, that revolves around the sun, symbolizing opportunity, responsibility, and growth, on June 20th, during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. Pharrell Williams debut collection for the French Mansion draws inspiration from the sun as a universal source of life, representing its capacity to invigorate, heal, and unify people from all walks of life. The collection pays tribute to the sun’s impact through graphics, warm color palette, and glistening surface decorations.
SPRING SUMMER 2024 COLLECTIONS
The show took place on Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, creating a symbolic link between Paris and Pharrell Williams’ native state of Virginia. It symbolizes his progression and inspiration from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach to his journey in fashion, which was influenced by Marc Jacobs and Pietro Beccari at Louis Vuitton. Combining American varsity jackets with Parisian craftsmanship, the collection reimagines sporty wardrobes with pearl embroidery and the emblematic Monogram.
The Louis Vuitton initials become the emblem of a new culture of LVERS, representing a culture founded on tenderness, well-being, and inclusiveness. They appear in graphics and embellishments to represent a global community united by a shared appreciation for the Maison’s guiding principles. Attention to detail is evident in all aspects, from garment techniques to buttons and closures, and reflects the same care and affection. The LVERS emblem also references the slogan of Pharrell Williams’ native state, “Virginia is for lovers”. Revived from the archives, a Marque L. Vuitton Déposée logo appears throughout the collection. Damoflage combines the iconic Louis Vuitton Damier pattern with camouflage as a tribute to Pharrell Williams’ Parisian friends. It is found in a variety of tints on accessories, workwear, denim, and knitwear. Landscape motifs and the Louis Vuitton flower pattern, featured in prints and jacquards on coats and bags, reflect outdoor sensibilities.
Primary colors invigorate the classic Damier chessboard graphic, reimagined in multiple adaptations. Pixel artist ET Artist digitalizes the Damier motif with an 8-bit Atari variation. The Damier leather grain is interpreted in 3D pigment designs, while tailoring, pajamas, and denim feature colored Damier expressions. The design also incorporates pied de poule and hand-embroidered pearl embellishments. The dandy attitude inspires loosely autobiographical, modernized tailored silhouettes. Suits adorned with pearls and crystals exemplify the art of dressing with their classic yet contemporary proportions and collarless expressions. Shrunken volumes contrast with oversized trousers and box-pleat shorts. The iconic Louis Vuitton Speedy purse is updated to capture the spirit of New York City’s Canal Street. It feastures trapezoidal lines, supple grained calfskin, and an artisanal silkscreen-printed Monogram with a blurred effect. The collection also includes Monogram Copper, which evokes the sun-healing properties of copper. The Damoflage pattern appears on purses, backpacks, and sneaker trunks, whereas the Multicolor Damier pattern appears on numerous Maison emblems.
With magnified shearling slippers, nubuck bowling shoes, and LV-crested leather hotel slippers, comfort is prioritized. The LV Sport sneaker and evening football boot are sporty alternatives, whereas penny loafers and expanded leather loafers exude sophistication. Accessories include Super Zoom sunglasses, opulent costume jewelry embellished with pearls and crystals, and an assortment of hats, gloves, and belts inspired by Damier and Damoflage. The portraits and symbolic objects of American artist Henry Taylor are micro-embroidered on tailoring, denim, and accessories.
The show opened with a filmic prelude, “Pupil King,” directed by Todd Tourso, featuring a conversation between comedian Jerrod Carmichael and artist Henry Taylor. The soundtrack includes original compositions by Pharrell Williams, including “Peace Be Still” and “JOY (Unspeakable).” The show concluded with a musical performance by Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z, bringing together the worlds of fashion and music in a grand finale.
