Prime Video is set to premiere “Expats,” a six-part limited series directed by Lulu Wang, based on the internationally best-selling novel “The Expatriates” by Janice Y. K. Lee. The eagerly awaited series debuts with two episodes on January 26, 2024, followed by weekly releases culminating in the finale on February 23, 2024.
Starring in “Expats” are Nicole Kidman, an Academy Award- and Emmy-winning actor known for her roles in “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing”; Sarayu Blue, recognized for her performances in “Never Have I Ever” and “Blockers”; and Ji-young Yoo, seen in “The Sky Is Everywhere” and “Smoking Tigers.” The cast also includes Brian Tee from “Chicago Med” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” and Jack Huston of “House of Gucci” and “Fargo.” Nicole Kidman and Lulu Wang also serve as executive producers for the series.
Set in the dynamic backdrop of 2014 Hong Kong, “Expats” focuses on the intersecting lives of three American women – Margaret (played by Nicole Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue), and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) – as they navigate the complexities of life following a family tragedy. The narrative explores themes of privilege and the murky lines between victimhood and culpability. Brian Tee portrays Margaret’s husband Clarke, while Jack Huston takes on the role of Hilary’s husband David.
Lulu Wang is at the helm of “Expats” as the creator, director, and writer. She is joined by Daniele Melia for Local Time in executive producing the series. Alongside them is Nicole Kidman, who produces with Per Saari for Blossom Films, known for projects like “Rabbit Hole” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Australian screenwriter Alice Bell, known for “The Beautiful Lie” and “The Slap,” was the first writer onboarded to the series and also serves as an executive producer. Theresa Park from Per Capita Productions (“After Yang,” “Bones and All”) and Stan Wlodkowski (“The Old Guard”) are also executive producers. The writing team includes Vera Miao (“Two Sentence Horror Stories”), Gursimran Sandhu (“Game of Thrones”), alongside author Janice Y. K. Lee, with Bell and Wang.
