The Dior Haute Couture Fall Winter 2024-2025 show paid homage to the remarkable life and legacy of Faith Ringgold, an artist whose work has deeply influenced the discourse around activism, diversity, and inclusion. The installation at the show is also a tribute to Ringgold’s tireless advocacy for social change through creative expression. Ringgold, who passed away in April 2024, was commemorated in an environment that reflected her vibrant, narrative-rich art, and her career as a painter, sculptor, and quilt maker.
Faith Ringgold was born in Harlem, New York, in 1930, and her journey in the arts was characterized by both innovation and struggle. Overcoming the racial and gender barriers of her time, she pursued her education in visual arts at the City College of New York, later becoming a revered professor emerita at the University of California, San Diego. Ringgold’s early experiences in the 1960s, traveling through Europe and creating her first political paintings, laid the groundwork for her activistic art practice.
The show’s installation drew inspiration from Ringgold’s “American People” series and her innovative thangkas—a form that integrates the traditional Tibetan painting with richly brocaded fabrics. These elements highlighted Ringgold’s ability to combine different cultural influences and art forms, reflecting her travels to Nigeria and Ghana where she deepened her appreciation for African art traditions, particularly masks and textiles.
One of Ringgold’s most significant contributions to the art world was her transformation of quilting into a medium of storytelling and protest. The first quilt she created, “Echoes of Harlem,” in collaboration with her mother, Madame Willi Posey, became a symbolic piece that extended her practice into fabric art. Her quilts, which often featured narrative sequences and border designs, were a powerful medium for her voice.
Her influence extended beyond the visual arts into literature, particularly through children’s books with lessons on history and resistance. “Tar Beach,” perhaps her most famous book, transcends the form of a children’s story to act as a reflective piece on freedom and the power of imagination. It won numerous awards and is a part of the permanent collection at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative force, has always been keenly focused on elevating the voices of women in the arts, highlighting feminist narratives through her collections. Her engagement with Faith Ringgold’s work transformed from mere admiration to a collaborative dialogue when Chiuri attended the 2022 retrospective exhibition of Ringgold at the New Museum in New York.
This collaborative spirit was showcased during the Dior Fall 2024 show at the Brooklyn Museum, where a reinterpretation of the iconic Lady Dior bag was unveiled, inspired by Ringgold’s 2004 artwork, “Mama Can Sing.” The subsequent Autumn Winter 2024-2025 haute couture show continued this collaboration, featuring an installation that Ringgold and Chiuri had created in 2023 in collaboration with the Chanakya Ateliers and the Chanakya School of Craft.
