The little black dress is one of the rare garments that has stood the test of time from the 1920s to the present. It has been worn by several generations of women, survived different eras, and arrived in modern times after countless reinterpretations. High fashion designers have continuously reinvented the little black dress, taking on the challenge of giving this classic piece a fresh twist while preserving its original identity.

The History of the Iconic Black Sheath Dress

Coco Chanel introduced the first little black dress in the 1920s. Before then, black was traditionally worn only during mourning. Chanel’s design featured a simple cut with a mid-calf length and a straight or boat neck. This minimalist yet revolutionary dress was destined to become a timeless and modern garment, offering freedom and sensuality, and revolutionizing women’s fashion of that time.

Also known as “petite robe noire,” as Coco Chanel called it, this piece perfectly met the needs of the era. It was elegant, comfortable, and versatile, perfect for any occasion. The classy black dress owes its popularity to Audrey Hepburn, who wore a model designed by Hubert de Givenchy in the famous film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Many haute couture masters, inspired by the success of the little black dress, could not resist creating their own versions. Designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Armani, Tom Ford, and Christina Stambolian have all contributed to its legacy. Among these, it is worth mentioning the iconic Versace black dress worn by Elizabeth Hurley in 1994 at the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Accompanied by Hugh Grant, Hurley wore a black stretch silk gown with a plunging neckline and a side slit, held together by large gold safety pins.

Probably still one of the brand’s most famous dresses and an icon in fashion history, it helped launch Hurley’s career. At the time, it was a vision that left everyone speechless, to the point that magazines talked about it for a long time.

Versace remains one of the greatest admirers of the little black dress, so much so that over the years they have reintroduced it in various versions, from punk to romantic. These include sensual leather models, long satin gowns, classic minimal sheath dresses, and short mini dresses.

Styling Advice

The LBD proves to be a must-have once again this year thanks to its simplicity and elegance.

It is the best ally for every woman, from Hollywood stars to the girl next door. Everyone owns at least one essential black dress in their wardrobe.

The success of this feminine piece of clothing lies in its versatility: classy and simple at the same time, it adapts to a multitude of possible combinations. Just a few special accessories can completely transform, elevate, or play down any look while maintaining its elegance.

For daytime, a plain black dress can be paired with low heels, ballet flats, or even sneakers if you prefer a more casual look.

On the other hand, when styled with high heels and a trendy necklace, this classic turns into the perfect evening dress for a formal event.

The little black dress also allows for more creative and daring combinations. A leather jacket and a pair of combat boots are ideal for a cool rock attitude, perfect for women who love bold outfits. Alternatively, white sneakers can be an excellent choice for a youthful and contemporary style. For summer, consider pairing the little black dress with heeled sandals or mules to achieve a fresh and trendy appearance.

No matter the style, a little black dress is always a good choice.
