Allina Liu’s Spring 2025 show, Good For Her, offers a celebration of femininity through a unique lens, inspired by woman-led cults and the traditions of Midsommar. The collection draws from Scandinavian folk costumes, updating traditional elements like scalloped and geometric necklines with a fresh, contemporary twist. Liu’s work seamlessly incorporates both historical references and modern aesthetics, crafting wearable yet distinctive pieces that bridge past and present influences. In partnership with Brooklyn-based TômTex, Liu also advances her sustainability efforts, using an innovative biomaterial derived from recycled seafood shells and mushrooms to create a cruelty-free, biodegradable alternative to leather.
The show’s immersive experience deepens the narrative, placing attendees amidst a symbolic gathering of disciples and initiates. Daffodils, sewn into garments using the ancient quilting technique of trapunto stitching, signify resilience, while also referencing their use in Pagan spells for empowerment. This dynamic staging reinforces the themes of female strength and authority that run through both the collection and the show.
Liu’s designs reflect the historical power of femininity, which has both inspired admiration and incited fear. Female-led spiritual movements, such as the Vestal Virgins of Rome and ancient Egyptian priestesses, show how women’s influence extended beyond conventional roles, grounding them in cycles of wisdom and nature. Through her collection, Liu draws parallels between these ancient societies and the modern exploration of feminine power.
Despite their influence, many of these female-centric movements were ultimately suppressed by patriarchal societies. The persecution of women as witches during the medieval era, often driven by fear of their knowledge and spiritual practices, is one example of this suppression. Liu’s collection echoes this history, reclaiming the idea of feminine authority and resisting the narrative of marginalization.
The contrast between empowerment and repression informs much of Liu’s Good For Her collection. Through careful references to ancient rites and modern iconography, the show speaks to the resilience of femininity throughout history. It also challenges the structures that have sought to diminish women’s influence.
In doing so, Allina Liu’s Spring 2025 collection stands as both a tribute and a statement, honoring the strength of women while reframing historical narratives. Good For Her invites the audience to reflect on the enduring legacy of feminine power and its evolving role in shaping fashion and culture.
