Gagosian Gallery is set to showcase an exclusive exhibition by celebrated photographer Nan Goldin, titled You never did anything wrong, at its New York location on 522 West 21st Street. Opening on September 12, this exhibition marks Goldin’s first presentation of new work since joining Gagosian in 2023. The exhibition will feature two new moving-image works displayed in specially designed pavilions, alongside a significant body of new photographs.
ART
One of the centerpiece works, Stendhal Syndrome (2024), juxtaposes Goldin’s photographs of Classical, Renaissance, and Baroque masterpieces with portraits of her friends, family, and lovers, creating a dialogue across time and art forms. The result is a thought-provoking exploration of beauty, love, and loss that blurs the boundaries between personal narrative and historical art.
The second moving-image piece, You never did anything wrong, Part 1 (2024), captures the totality of a solar eclipse in a hauntingly abstract home movie, enhanced by a soundtrack that features music by Valerij Fedorenko, a new score by Mica Levi, and natural ambient sounds recorded during the eclipse. This work marks Goldin’s first foray into abstract art, inspired by ancient myths of animals stealing the sun.
The moving images are projected within freestanding pavilions designed by Goldin in collaboration with architect Hala Wardé, merging architecture, image, and sound into a cohesive artistic experience. The exhibition also includes new grid photographs that reflect Goldin’s ability to connect past and present through visual storytelling, such as in Orpheus Dying (2024), which pairs an 1866 Baroque painting with a photograph of Goldin’s lover, showcasing the seamless integration of historical and contemporary art.
Goldin’s fifty-year career has been marked by her fearless exploration of human experiences, and this latest exhibition continues her tradition of revealing universal truths through her lens.
