McQueen ’s FW25 pre-collection turns its gaze to Soho, London, a neighborhood shaped by contradiction and creative defiance. Known for its historic blend of transgression and artistic energy, the district serves as both inspiration and location for the new season, which was photographed by Theo Sion inside The Coach & Horses pub. Once a refuge for postwar misfits, the pub now frames McQueen’s modern cast, echoing the persistent tension between tradition and rebellion.

Drawing from Soho’s long-standing community of writers, painters, and thinkers, the collection references the spirit of artists such as Francis Bacon, Caroline Blackwood, Lucian Freud, and Elizabeth Smart. These figures, known for their nonconformity and irreverence, inform a wardrobe rooted in intellect and edge, sharp-collared shirting, strong-shouldered coats, and silhouettes drawn close to the body with a subtle sheen. The clothes speak to a creative class moving through city streets, caught somewhere between bohemia and formality.

This season’s tailoring reflects a dual sensibility: heritage and deviation. Traditional wool pieces, Prince of Wales check, red boating stripes, and Scottish tartan, are rendered with sharp precision, while nylon flight jackets and lace-trimmed satin inject a sense of unfiltered modernity. Outerwear references naval uniforms through blousons and coats in wool-silk gabardine, fusing sailor pragmatism with McQueen’s sculptural codes. Throughout, a saturated palette captures the sulphuric glow of the London streets.

The collection also incorporates symbols of permanence and impermanence. Embroideries take cues from vintage sailor tattoos, swallows, butterflies, and florals, reimagined in metallic bullion, sequins, and twisted bugle beads. These marks of memory and identity appear on jackets and dresses, anchoring McQueen’s archival motifs in a contemporary setting. It’s a tactile homage to storytelling through the body.

Accessories reinforce the narrative with rich detail. The T-Bar Sling and Skull Flower bags bear signature McQueen hardware, while footwear includes 1950s-inspired boots and python-stamped leather mules with modernist hardware. Jewellery maintains a defiant elegance, McQueen’s signature skull appears set in crystals and pearls, while slim-framed eyewear evokes the minimalism of the same postwar decade.

By revisiting Soho’s radical past and reinterpreting its influence for the present, McQueen’s Fall Winter 2025 pre-collection reaffirms the brand’s connection to place, identity, and craftsmanship. The collection captures a sense of continuity through shifting eras, reflecting characters defined by nostalgia, and a resistance to convention.
