Leonard takes on the role of Creative Director for the launch campaign. He shapes the visual language and narrative, aligning the release with his identity on the court and beyond it. The campaign will also reference his longtime nickname, adding another layer to the rollout.

The KAWHI V reflects Leonard’s two-way playing style through a design that prioritizes performance while maintaining a wearable aesthetic beyond basketball settings. The silhouette incorporates premium materials and a modern structure, allowing the shoe to function within both athletic and everyday contexts. This balance continues a consistent approach within the line, where performance features remain central while design details connect to Leonard’s personality.
The model builds on themes that have defined the signature series, focusing on understanding personal strengths and translating them into design. The KAWHI V introduces refinements in fit and material selection, aligning with Leonard’s aggressive approach to the game. Every element supports his need for responsiveness and stability during play.

Kawhi Leonard explains that his work with the New Balance design team continues a process they have developed over several years. He states that he wanted the KAWHI V to focus on the first step and the initial burst felt on the court, while adding details that support top-level performance and reflect his creative style.
Leonard worked closely with the design team to refine both structure and performance features. The shoe introduces a soft upper material designed to provide lockdown and comfort, ensuring stability during quick movements. A dual-density FuelCell midsole delivers responsive cushioning, while a forefoot YPlate supports explosive motion and directional changes.

Kevin Trotman, Senior Product Manager for New Balance Basketball, says that the collaboration focused on defining elements of Leonard’s game, including control and immediate acceleration. He adds that the model delivers containment and support for confident play, while maintaining a refined look suited for use beyond the court.
An apparel capsule will launch alongside the first colorway. The offering will include a lightweight warm-up jacket, tapered performance shorts, and a breathable training tee, designed to align with the performance focus of the KAWHI V.
