Driving through the Dolomites in August is an experience I would happily repeat. The winding roads, mountains rising in the distance, and endless shades of green make the journey as enjoyable as the destination. As we climbed higher towards Oberbozen, the air became noticeably fresher, offering a welcome escape from the summer heat. Our destination was Bella Posta, a newly redesigned hotel on South Tyrol’s Ritten plateau, where Alpine scenery meets a decidedly Italian approach to hospitality.
HOTELS
Having reopened in March 2026 following an extensive renovation, Bella Posta offers a contemporary interpretation of mountain living. Its colourful interiors, relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful surroundings make it an interesting alternative to the more traditional Alpine hotels.

Location
Situated approximately 1,220 metres above sea level, Oberbozen, also known as Soprabolzano, enjoys a panoramic position overlooking the surrounding countryside and the Dolomites. The village feels wonderfully peaceful, with forests, meadows, and walking trails beginning almost immediately outside the hotel.
One of the property’s greatest advantages is its proximity to Bolzano. The Ritten cable car, located just a three-minute walk from Bella Posta, connects the plateau with the city in approximately twelve minutes. Guests can explore Bolzano’s historic streets, shops, and cafés before returning to the tranquillity of the mountains.
I particularly enjoyed visiting in August, when the landscape was incredibly green and the temperatures made spending time outdoors a pleasure. Despite the summer season, the atmosphere felt relaxed, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature.

Design
Bella Posta brings together two historic buildings previously known as Post Victoria. The main building once served as a farmhouse, inn, and hotel with its own post office, while the neighbouring Villa Victoria provided additional accommodation.
The Holzner family, who also operate the nearby Parkhotel Holzner, collaborated with architectural studio raro to transform the property into a contemporary retreat.

The renovation introduces warm colours, retro-inspired furniture, natural wood, and clean architectural lines. The result feels playful and inviting, with a personality that distinguishes Bella Posta from the conventional mountain hotel.
I particularly liked the way the interiors balance colourful details with the surrounding landscape. Large windows bring the outdoors inside, while lounges, terraces, and comfortable seating areas encourage guests to spend time beyond their rooms.

Rooms
The main building features 22 individually designed rooms and suites, ranging from compact accommodation for solo travellers and couples to spacious two-level suites suitable for small families or groups.
Natural light plays an important role throughout, complemented by wood finishes, contemporary furnishings, and cheerful colour accents. Many rooms offer balconies or terraces overlooking the surrounding mountains and gardens.

The separate annexe, which opened in summer 2025, houses 14 studios with a more minimalist aesthetic. Dark wood, simple furnishings, and generous proportions give these spaces a quieter character. Each studio includes a balcony, terrace, or sheltered garden, while selected accommodations also feature kitchenettes.
The overall experience feels comfortable and uncomplicated, with enough thoughtful design details to make the rooms interesting without sacrificing practicality.

Amenities
Bella Posta’s Gioia Spa includes an indoor swimming pool with mountain views, a sauna, steam bath, and relaxation areas. Outside, the hotel’s garden offers space to enjoy the fresh air, read, or spend an afternoon doing very little.
For me, however, the highlight was exploring the surrounding landscape.
We decided to hike the Freud Promenade, a scenic walking route connecting Oberbozen with Klobenstein. Named after Sigmund Freud, who spent time on the Ritten plateau in 1911, the trail passes through forests and meadows with beautiful views of the Schlern and Rosengarten mountains.

The walk was wonderful. The air was fresh, the countryside impossibly green, and the changing scenery made every section interesting. After completing the promenade, we continued hiking further, enjoying the beautiful weather and peaceful surroundings.
Eventually, rather than walking the entire way back, we boarded the historic Ritten railway, which has connected villages across the plateau since 1907. Travelling through the countryside aboard the little train was a lovely way to finish the afternoon.

Dining
Bella Posta’s dining concept, Dolce Vita All Day, reflects the hotel’s relaxed approach to hospitality. Instead of following a rigid schedule, guests can enjoy food and refreshments throughout the day.
Breakfast is served until 11 a.m., with fresh pastries, fruit, yoghurt, brioche, and savoury options. Later, crostata, snacks, and drinks are available, while the afternoon introduces the Italian tradition of aperitivo.
Dinner focuses on familiar Italian dishes with South Tyrolean influences, including antipasti, homemade pasta, and classic desserts. The atmosphere remains informal, encouraging guests to enjoy their evenings without rushing.

An honesty bar provides additional refreshments later in the evening. Guests seeking a more elaborate culinary experience can also visit Restaurant 1908 at neighbouring Parkhotel Holzner, where chef Stephan Zippl presents contemporary regional cuisine.
I appreciated the flexibility of the concept. After a long day of hiking, being able to return to the hotel and enjoy an aperitivo without worrying about fixed dining times felt particularly welcome.

Final Impressions
What I enjoyed most about Bella Posta was its ability to make a mountain holiday feel spontaneous. The hotel offers the comfort and facilities expected from a contemporary retreat, while its colourful interiors and informal hospitality bring something refreshing to the Alpine setting.
The beautiful August weather certainly helped, but it was the surrounding landscape that made the greatest impression. Walking through the meadows, continuing beyond the Freud Promenade, and taking the little train home remain my favourite memories from the stay.
Bella Posta is a wonderful choice for travellers who appreciate thoughtful design, outdoor experiences, and the pleasures of Italian hospitality. Its location offers an excellent starting point for discovering South Tyrol, while the hotel itself provides plenty of reasons to stay a little longer.
For me, the greatest luxury was simply having the freedom to enjoy the mountains at my own pace.
