Nike Air Rift “Black/Desert Ochre” gives one of Nike’s most recognizable split-toe silhouettes a new material treatment, covering the women’s shoe in cheetah-print pony hair. The design keeps the Air Rift’s lightweight construction and close-fitting shape while introducing a soft, textured surface that changes the character of the model.
SHOES
Cheetah-print pony hair dominates the upper, combining black and Desert Ochre across an animal pattern that immediately distinguishes the release from versions made with conventional leather or mesh. The material creates a slightly fuzzy finish that reacts differently to light and gives the shoe greater visual depth. Nike adds genuine leather sections and textile panels to provide structure around the softer pony-hair surface and help maintain the shoe’s form during regular wear.

The Air Rift’s split-toe construction remains central to the design. The shape separates the big toe from the remaining toes, giving the shoe its distinctive profile. Its slim proportions sit closely around the foot, creating a shape that recalls the delicacy of a ballet flat while retaining the technical construction associated with a sneaker.
A hook-and-loop strap controls the fit and allows the wearer to secure or adjust the shoe quickly. The simple fastening system complements the low-profile upper and keeps the focus on the unusual shape and textured material. With the pony hair extending across much of the surface, the Black and Desert Ochre color combination becomes the defining visual feature.

Nike keeps the cushioning system straightforward underneath. A foam midsole provides the primary layer of comfort, while Nike Air cushioning helps soften impact during each step. The rubber outsole adds traction for everyday use, completing a construction designed for regular movement on city surfaces.
The latest treatment also shows how far the Air Rift has developed from its original performance context. Nike first introduced the silhouette in 1996 as a progressive running shoe, using its unusual split-toe shape as a key element of the design. The Black/Desert Ochre edition retains that recognizable construction while shifting the visual focus toward material, texture and styling.
That combination allows the Air Rift to work across different types of dressing. Its narrow shape and ballet-flat influence give it a refined profile, while its sneaker construction keeps the design connected to its athletic origins. Nike uses material and print to update a silhouette that has carried its unconventional split-toe design since 1996.
