Make sure it’s cozy
It’s not enough to just push aside the old paint cans, put up a desk and hook up your inkjet printers. You need to make it into an actual office, which involves clearing out a portion of the garage that is independent of the rest. Make a sort of cubicle which blocks out the rest of the garage with a smooth floor and at least a partition behind the desk.
The more like a regular office you make this the better your results will be. Install a heater to be able to work when it’s cold out. If you have to bundle up to bear it then you’re likely not going to get much work done.
Install fixtures
In any office, whether it’s a home or actual office, the lighting is very important. It should be as natural and illuminating as possible. Most garages don’t allow a lot of natural light into them because their function is not a living space.
You can install daylight lights to give you the right illumination for a healthy work environment.
Having enough outlets is also important. Overloading a single outlet with multiple devices is a fire waiting to happen. Hire an electrician to install some extra outlets so you don’t overload the existing ones.
Lastly, have a modem connected in your garage that is separate from the house. This is for two primary reasons. The first is that you’ll need a stable connection that is strong and not prone to downtime. If your garage is away from the house, the signal may not be strong enough. Secondly, you need to have a very secure router for your work to prevent any hackers from getting access.
Make it serviceable
Since your office is going to be set apart from the house, make sure that you have all of your needs met there so you don’t have to keep coming into the house. If you plan to drink multiple coffees during the day, for instance then you should make sure that you have a little coffee corner with everything you need to make your brew including some snacks.
If you have it in your budget, putting a small bathroom in there is also going to help you avoid wasting time by taking trips inside the house.
