IKEA is reigniting a passion for iconic designs with the latest edition of its Nytillverkad collection, which will hit stores in January 2024. This launch celebrates the relaxed and playful styles of the 60s and early 70s, reimagined for contemporary living spaces. The collection, featuring the work of legendary IKEA designers Karin Mobring and Gillis Lundgren, presents a nostalgic journey back to an era marked by vibrant youth culture and dynamic social change.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The Nytillverkad collection’s third edition breathes new life into iconic IKEA pieces with updated colors and materials, aligning with the modern-day aspirations and styles. It reflects a period when fresh materials like painted particleboard and plastic were introduced, giving rise to furniture that embodied a youthful spirit. This edition revives that era’s bold shapes, optimistic colors, and comfortable furnishings, including soft, high pile rugs, allowing design enthusiasts to reconnect with a pivotal design period.

Karin Mobring, IKEA’s first female designer and a significant contributor to the IKEA style, is celebrated in this collection. Recognized for her versatile designs and rooted in classic, rural Scandinavian style, Mobring developed around a hundred IKEA products. The collection reintroduces her CROMI side table as the BAGGBODA, featuring a chrome-plated frame and available in white or light-yellow tabletops.

Gillis Lundgren, who joined IKEA in 1954, was known for his visionary designs and close collaboration with IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad. Among his iconic creations, the MILA armchair is reimagined as the DYVLINGE swivel armchair in this collection. Additionally, his 1969 PUCK armchair returns as the SOTENÄS, retaining its spacious and inviting design.

Swedish designers Sven Fristedt and Ehlén Johansson also contributed significantly to the collection. Fristedt’s striking 60s and 70s patterns reappear on the STRECKFLY cushion covers and ÄNGSFIBBLA pre-cut fabric. Johansson, a renowned designer and Red Dot Design Award winner, offers the elegant SKOGSTUNDRA vase, designed to gracefully support cut flowers.

Johan Ejdemo, Global Design Manager at IKEA, shares his enthusiasm: “Vintage furniture has made a big comeback lately, and there’s been a growing demand for certain IKEA products that have become collector’s favourites. That is why we decided to bring back a selection of our design icons, and we are excited to see interest coming from customers of all ages, especially young people who are discovering our design legacy and using these vibrant solutions to express themselves at home. To us, these products are the essence of democratic design, they are timeless, as they combine a beautiful form, a great function, sustainability, an affordable price, and quality that lasts long.”

The Nytillverkad collection’s third edition will be available in IKEA stores worldwide from January 2024.
